EPD EVENTS: Past

EPD Social

During orientation week, EPD students (especially first years) were welcomed by their favorite PAs at the Harlem Tavern, for a few drinks, snacks, and an informal getting-to-know-you session. Throughout the year, we will have a ton more socials and happy hours, so keep an eye out for those!

EPD Retreat

This past weekend, an enthusiastic mix of first and some second-year EPD students went for a retreat to Taconic Outdoor Education Center (TOEC), in Cold Springs NY. We were also joined by EPD professors, who participated with the students in a frantic game of Shark Tank—SIPA edition, as they attempted to comedically tackle the numerous problems that arise on a daily basis at SIPA. As the purpose of the retreat serves, we also engaged in some physically challenging yet not strenuous, team building activities. In their downtime,  the first years also had the opportunity to consult their more seasoned second years for guidance on courses, internships, and other resources. Overall, a short getaway from the city with friends and the sunny but windy weather provided for an incredible retreat. We look forward to hosting more in the near future!

In 2014, ISIS launched the Yazidi Genocide, targeting Iraq’s Yazidi minority. The film’s shows that the lives of surviving women will be scarred forever if the perpetrators go unpunished and if there is no justice for the Yazidi people.

Following a 20-minute film screening of the documentary, filmmaker Düzen Tekkal will discuss both the role of female Yazidi genocide survivors as agents of change in international relations and peace processes, as well as the importance of international institutions, such as the United Nations, in punishing crimes against humanity and putting an end to impunity.

Feast of San Gennaro, Little Italy | New York Latin Culture MagazineTheme of the Week: Cultural Festival

The Feast of San Gennaro

When: Up until Sunday, September 25, 2022
Time: 11:30 AM - 11:00 PM (or midnight on Fridays and Saturdays)
Where: Little Italy along Mulberry Street, between Canal and Houston Streets

The Feast of San Gennaro, NYC’s largest and longest-running Italian festival, in Little Italy. Currently commemorating its 96th birthday, the celebrations feature religious processions, parades, live music, and genuine Italian cuisine. Legendary San Gennaro dishes like deep-fried Oreos, sausage 'n' peppers, and zeppole—a famous Italian pastry—are all on the menu, along with fresh takes on old favorites from the area's newest cafes and eateries. A community organization called Figli di San Gennaro (Children of San Gennaro) today oversees the Feast, preserving the original spirit of September 19, 1926, when new immigrants from Naples commemorated Saint Januarius, the patron saint of their city, and the day in 305 A.D. when he was martyred. The Feast of San Gennaro features free music (most nights 7:00 - 9:30 PM) and free music and/ or food talks (every afternoon 2:00 - 5:00 PM) on the Festival Stage at the corner of Grand and Mott Streets. The Feast connects Little Italy to the world and the world to Little Italy.
