Around the globe and in the US, we have seen a surge in support for populist candidates and causes, often resulting in threats to economic health and democracy. What role did economic policy play in generating this support, and how can future economic policy better foster support for democracy? Building on a recent essay series and convening, Columbia SIPA’s Institute of Global Politics (IGP) and the Washington Center for Equitable Growth are organizing a high-profile public discussion on these topics. At the inaugural public event for IGP’s American Democracy Initiative, we will host journalists, policy experts, civil society leaders and elected officials in discussion regarding the potential paths forward for an economic policy agenda that can better support shared prosperity and a durable democracy.

This event is co-sponsored by Work and Labor Idea Lab at Columbia Center for Political Economy.

Speakers will include:
Sheri Berman, Professor of Political Science, Barnard College
Mary Kay Henry, Former International President of the Service Employees International Union, IGP Carnegie Distinguished Fellow
Alexander Hertel-Fernandez, Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and Director of IGP’s American Democracy Initiative, Columbia SIPA
Faiz Shakir, Founder and Executive Director, More Perfect Union
Joseph Stiglitz, University Professor at Columbia University and IGP Faculty Advisory Board Member, Columbia SIPA
Shayna Strom, President and CEO of the Washington Center for Equitable Growth

And more!
