  • On Thursday, Russia vetoed UN Security Council resolution to extend the mandate of an expert panel which monitors sanctions against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). This in effect abolishes the monitoring of UN sanctions against the country, more commonly known as North Korea, blocking the extension of the panel for another year.
  • International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to unblock Gaza food aid. Judges issued an unanimous decision, stating “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine… but that famine is setting in”. Israeli officials did not issue a direct response to the ICJ’s order.

  • UN peacekeeping forces in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) have announced an investigation into an explosion in the Rmeish area that injured four unarmed peacekeepers on a foot patrol. Three military observers from the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and a Lebanese language assistant – have been evacuated for medical treatment.

  • One in three migrant deaths happens while people flee conflict, the UN migration agency, IOM has released in a report. IOM also noted that the number of unidentified deaths remains high – more than two in three migrants. IOM Deputy Director General for Operations urged to turn this attention on the data into concrete action.

  • United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Kamal Kishore of India as Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). Read more here.

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

Introducing Gloria Gerhardt ( MPA, EDP).

Gloria firmly believe that addressing today's most pressing issues necessitates a foundation of multilateralism and global governance. She is particularly interested in sustainable development, migration, and digital inclusion, recognizing them as key challenges of our contemporary world. It is imperative that international cooperation adapts its way of working to the nature of emerging issues, such as the rapidly evolving development of new technologies, misinformation and growing inequalities, which demand fast and multidimensional responses. Such challenges cannot be tackled only through international cooperation but also require cross-sector collaboration.

Moreover, she is an advocate for leveraging data in strategic policymaking. She is convinced that organizations like the United Nations benefit immensely from embracing evidence-based approaches. By harnessing the power of data, we can inform more effective policies and interventions, thereby enhancing the global response to complex issues. In essence, she believes that collective action, informed by data-driven insights, is essential for navigating the landscape of contemporary global challenges.

Prior to joining SIPA, Gloria was part of a small research, analysis and learning team at UNHCR, Peru where she worked on the creation of a Whatsapp Chatbot for refugees and migrants, among other topics. Aside from international affairs, she enjoys traveling around South America, learning new languages, and running.
