  • Last Friday, 28 March, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar. UN teams in the region are “responding fast”, said UN relief chief Tom Fletcher on Friday. News reports quoting sources in the Burmese city of Mandalay, close to the epicentre of the quake, indicate that hundreds have died. In neighbouring Thailand more than 80 construction workers are missing, according to the Thai deputy prime minister, with a search and rescue operation underway.
  • On Thursday, 27 March, President Trump said he had asked Representative Elise Stefanik, Republican of New York, to withdraw her bid to be ambassador to the United Nations, amid concern about the minuscule voting margin that Republicans hold in the House. The president said he wanted the New York Republican to stay in Congress to bolster the party’s slim House margin and protect her seat.
  • UN policymakers have suggested countries should consider looking beyond Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, as the key measure of economic growth to achieve the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative is in line with UN Secretary-General António Guterres's longstanding assertion that “moving beyond GDP is fundamental to building an economic system that gives value to what counts – human well-being – now and in the future, and for everyone".

Event Recap: Women in Diplomacy

On 26 March, a panel discussion with four women ambassadors took place to an eager and packed house. Susana Malcorra, former Foreign Minister of Argentina, Vanessa Frazier, Permanent Representative of Malta to the UN, Maritza Chan, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the UN, and Thilmeeza Hussain, former Permanent Representative of Maldives to the UN shared invaluable insights on challenges senior female diplomats face and also on strategies to overcome them. Malcorra is also spearheading the campaign to elect a woman as the next UN Secretary-General. The inspiring discussion instilled life lessons and hope to all attendees. A recording of the panel will be available soon through the Saltzman Institute. This event was cohosted with IO/UNS, Saltzman Institute, and two student organizations - Conflict Resolution Collective, and Women In Leadership.

On 25 March, students gathered for an informal discussion with Dr. Maria Chepurina-Deswel, who serves as External Relations Officer at the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General (EOSG), to gain insight on how they can navigate a career in the UN and international affairs. Chepurina-Deswel, currently leads strategic initiatives and partnerships and drives multilateral cooperation to strengthen global peace and security. Moderated by Professor Stefan Tschauko, Chepurina-Deswel provided insights into her work in diplomacy and international relation and how she worked to strengthen global cooperation on nuclear disarmament. Event Recap: IO/UNS Spring Retreat

Thank you to all the students and great speakers who joined us for our annual IO/UNS retreat at Columbia University's Lamont Campus on Friday, 28 March. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated, setting the stage for a fantastic day. Students and guest speakers gathered early Friday morning to travel together to the off-campus site, where they participated in a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to help everyone get to know one another.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to interact with guest speakers and a faculty member with diverse experiences connected to the United Nations, including the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UN Peacebuilding Fund. After lunch, the group set out on a scenic hike to enjoy the fresh air, take in the natural surroundings, and even visit a waterfall. The day concluded on a lively note with students singing and performing re-written songs set to the tune of Marc Anthony’s Vivir Mi Vida.

We understand that not everyone was able to attend this year’s retreat due to various circumstances, but we hope you’ll be able to join us next year!

"Reparations can't be quantified," says Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka

"Reparations for the crimes of the transatlantic slave trade “can’t be quantified” given the vast historical sweep of human history, according to the first Black African to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, Wole Soyinka.

The longtime Nigerian democracy activist was at UN Headquarters in New York to take part in commemorations for the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery, telling the General Assembly that it remains crucial to confront centuries of wrongdoing.

Ana Carmo sat down with him in our UN News studio following the event and asked him to outline his main message to the international community."

In UN Peacekeepers as Enablers of Host State Authoritarianism? Professors Sarah von Billerbeck, Birte Julia Gippert, Kseniya Oksamytna, and Oisín Tansey draw on their new book, United Nations Peacekeeping and the Politics of Authoritarianism (Oxford University Press, 2025), to show that while the UN does not intentionally encourage authoritarianism, it faces several constraints and dilemmas that give rise to what the authors call While enabling stops short of the outright promotion of authoritarianism, it explains why the UN’s actions often appear to contradict its stated objectives and the outcomes it delivers often fall short of its goals. The think-piece introduces two types of enabling: first, UN capacity-building of the (often repressive) institutions of the state, and second, weak signals of disapproval when host governments engage in authoritarian behavior. Beyond explaining UN activities that may enable authoritarian behavior, the think-piece also highlights three strategies for peacekeepers to avoid enabling. UN peacekeepers often find themselves in situations where they face dilemmas and trade-offs in their interactions with host state authorities. This will undoubtedly remain the case in the future. However, awareness of the mechanisms of enabling and potential mitigation strategies may help to avoid repeating some of the mistakes of the past.

Read the full think-piece here and feel free to amplify our announcements on LinkedIn and BlueSky.

UN Career Advice Panel
Faculty House, Seminar Room, Hybrid

The UN Career Advice Panel will offer insight on various UN careers surrounding peacekeeping, peacebuilding, human rights advocacy, humanitarian efforts, legal expertise, and political strategy. This panel is designed to give prospective students and the public a closer look at the diverse career paths available at the UN and how Columbia's Summer Session combines academic rigor with valuable networking opportunities aimed to connect students with their passions and help prepare them for their careers.

Moderated by David Marshall, a former UN Human Rights Officer now with Global Affairs Canada, we will provide a 360-degree, headquarters and field perspective of what a professional life in the United Nations could look like. Joined by a panel of UN staff members, ranging from mid-career professionals to senior leaders, we will discuss how they have navigated their roles from both headquarters in New York and various field locations across the globe, each presenting their unique challenges and opportunities. Through their shared experiences, these diverse voices will help those seeking a profession at the UN better understand daily operations, the possibility of transitioning between departments, agencies, funds and programs, and the possibility of finding positions that resonate with professional motivations.

Strengthening Information Integrity in the Humanitarian Context
Online

Join us for a dynamic discussion on strengthening information integrity in the humanitarian context. Technological advances have revolutionized communications, connecting people on a previously unthinkable scale, supporting communities in crisis, and elevating marginalized voices. Yet, these same advances have heightened risks to information integrity, undermining trust, shared understanding, and public discourse. This event will explore the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity, which envision an information ecosystem that fosters trust, promotes responsible innovation, and empowers individuals and communities worldwide. The conversation will also address the urgent need for coordinated global action to redress power imbalances and safeguard information ecosystems for all.

Featured Speakers:

  • Ms. Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications
  • Dr. MJ Bosia, Executive Director, International Studies Association; Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Saint Michael’s College, Vermont; Director, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Saint Michael’s College, Vermont
  • Dr. Punam Yadav, Chair, ISA-UNAI Coordination Committee; Associate Professor in Humanitarian Studies, University College London; Director, UCL Humanitarian Institute; Co-Director, Centre for Gender and Disaster, Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction, University College London
