  • Yesterday, 7 April, the UN reflects and commemorates the 31st anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The atrocities took place over 100 days, starting on 7 April 1994.  Nearly one million children, women and men were killed. While the overwhelming majority were Tutsi, Hutu and others who opposed the genocide were also slaughtered. António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, called on Monday for commitment to build a world of justice and dignity in honour of the victims and survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. He joined survivors, diplomats and civil society members for the annual ceremony in the UN General Assembly Hall to mourn the lives lost in this “chilling chapter in human history” and to prevent it from ever happening again. “Despite early warnings, despite clear signs of impending catastrophe, the world stood by as the killing unfolded,” stated the President of the UN General Assembly,  Philémon Yang, who also addressed the international community’s inaction.

  • By 2033, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on course to become a $4.8 trillion global market – about the size of Germany’s economy – but unless urgent action is taken, its benefits may remain in the hands of a privileged few, a new UN report warns. On Thursday, 03 April, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), released The Technology and Innovation Report 2025, sounding the alarm on growing inequality in the AI landscape and lays out a roadmap for countries to harness AI’s potential. The report shows that just 100 companies, mostly in the United States and China, are behind 40 per cent of the world’s private investment in research and development, highlighting a sharp concentration of power.

  • The blockade of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip is having dire consequences for more than a million children, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Satruday, 05 April. No aid has been allowed into Gaza since 02 March, representing the longest period of aid blockage since the start of the war, resulting in shortages of food, safe water, shelter, and medical supplies. UNICEF warned that children receiving malnutrition treatment are at serious risk as 21 treatment centres, representing 15% of total outpatient facilities, have closed due to displacement orders or bombardments. Furthermore, only  enough ready-to-use infant formula (RUIF) is currently available for 400 children for a month. “Poor kids are looking all day for food to eat, and they can’t find any,” said Jalila Abu Laila, at a camp for displaced Gazans in the north of the enclave.

  • An estimated 100 million people in more than 60 countries and territories live under the threat of landmines and explosive ordnance – with war-torn Ukraine now the most heavily contaminated country in the world – the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) said on Monday. Millions of mines have been scattered across the battlefields of Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, making it the most dangerous place for unexploded weapons today. And as armed violence escalates worldwide, the UN agency says that the number injured and killed by mines and other explosive ordnance “rose by 22 per cent in 2024. That amounts to more than 1,000 extra victims compared to 2023,” according to UNMAS. Around 85 per cent of the victims of explosive ordnance worldwide are civilians and more than half are children.

  • Given the aftermath of a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, its already fragile healthcare system is buckling under the intense strain. The UN World Health Organization (WHO) has been at the forefront of the emergency response, delivering critical medical supplies and coordinating lifesaving care. However, hospitals are overwhelmed, medical supplies are running dangerously low, and aid workers are racing to prevent deadly disease outbreaks among displaced communities. It is “an emergency within an emergency,” according to Nay Pyi Taw, Elena Vuolo, a WHO Deputy Representative in Myanmar who told UN News about the situation. She further stated that “even before the disaster, nearly 12 million people in Myanmar required healthcare assistance. Now, with this earthquake, the situation has worsened.”

"If countries stop playing by trade rules, poorer countries will suffer"

"In this episode of The Lid Is On, Conor Lennon from UN News speaks to Luz Maria de la Mora, the Director of the International Trade Division at UNCTAD, about the uncertainty that unilateral tariffs are having on the global trade outlook, and why the consequence could be particularly serious for developing economies."

You can listen to this episode here.

In case you missed it, last week's MiA think-piece was on the UN Peacekeepers as Enablers of Host State Authoritarianism? where Professors Sarah von Billerbeck, Birte Julia Gippert, Kseniya Oksamytna, and Oisín Tansey draw on their new book, United Nations Peacekeeping and the Politics of Authoritarianism (Oxford University Press, 2025), to show that while the UN does not intentionally encourage authoritarianism, it faces several constraints and dilemmas that give rise to what the authors call

You can read the full think-piece here and feel free to amplify our announcements on LinkedIn and BlueSky.

UN Career Advice Panel
Virtual

The UN Career Advice Panel will offer insight on various UN careers surrounding peacekeeping, peacebuilding, human rights advocacy, humanitarian efforts, legal expertise, and political strategy. This panel is designed to give prospective students and the public a closer look at the diverse career paths available at the UN and how Columbia's Summer Session combines academic rigor with valuable networking opportunities aimed to connect students with their passions and help prepare them for their careers.

Moderated by David Marshall, a former UN Human Rights Officer now with Global Affairs Canada, we will provide a 360-degree, headquarters and field perspective of what a professional life in the United Nations could look like. Joined by a panel of UN staff members, ranging from mid-career professionals to senior leaders, we will discuss how they have navigated their roles from both headquarters in New York and various field locations across the globe, each presenting their unique challenges and opportunities. Through their shared experiences, these diverse voices will help those seeking a profession at the UN better understand daily operations, the possibility of transitioning between departments, agencies, funds and programs, and the possibility of finding positions that resonate with professional motivations.

Strengthening Information Integrity in the Humanitarian Context
Online

Join us for a dynamic discussion on strengthening information integrity in the humanitarian context. Technological advances have revolutionized communications, connecting people on a previously unthinkable scale, supporting communities in crisis, and elevating marginalized voices. Yet, these same advances have heightened risks to information integrity, undermining trust, shared understanding, and public discourse. This event will explore the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity, which envision an information ecosystem that fosters trust, promotes responsible innovation, and empowers individuals and communities worldwide. The conversation will also address the urgent need for coordinated global action to redress power imbalances and safeguard information ecosystems for all.

Featured Speakers:

  • Ms. Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications
  • Dr. MJ Bosia, Executive Director, International Studies Association; Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Saint Michael’s College, Vermont; Director, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Saint Michael’s College, Vermont
  • Dr. Punam Yadav, Chair, ISA-UNAI Coordination Committee; Associate Professor in Humanitarian Studies, University College London; Director, UCL Humanitarian Institute; Co-Director, Centre for Gender and Disaster, Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction, University College London
