  • ‘Step back from the brink,’ to avert full-scale Middle East conflict, says UN chief. The people of the Middle East are facing a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict, António Guterres said on Sunday, urging “maximum restraint” across a region on the brink hours after Iran launched attack drones and missiles against Israel overnight Saturday.  “It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East...Now is the time for maximum restraint,” the UN Secretary-General told delegates at the opening of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
  • Suffering is growing too and is likely to get worse, Justin Brady, head of the UN humanitarian relief office, OCHA, in Sudan. “Without more resources, not only will we not be able to stop a famine, we’re not going to be help able to help basically anybody,” he said.“Most of the rations that people receive from the likes of the World Food Programme (WFP) are cut in half already, so we can’t strip more off the bone to try and make this operation work.” The grim conditions on the ground hit an emergency level soon after the rival Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces launched air and ground attacks in mid-April 2023, he said, as a tsunami of violence continues to surge across the country today, from the capital, Khartoum, and spiralling outwards.

  • UNCTAD rebrands to "UN Trade and Development". The strategic move renaming the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development underscores the organization's commitment to greater impact, with a new, clearer visual identity aiming to better reflect its work and values and to amplify its voice on behalf of developing countries. Under the leadership of Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan, the organization has been adapting to a rapidly changing global trade landscape impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and climate change, with initiatives that enhance the organization's capacity to rapidly analyze new challenges and support efforts in developing nations. The rebranding marks a pivotal moment. It's the first-ever comprehensive review of UNCTAD’s global communication footprint and a bold forward-looking strategy to communicate its work and values.

  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed a new transitional council in Haiti tasked with choosing new political leadership and setting up elections in the crisis-torn Caribbean country. In a statement issued on Saturday by his Spokesman, the UN chief welcomed the publication on Friday, 12 April of a decree formally establishing the Transitional Presidential Council, which is tasked with choosing Haiti’s next prime minister and Cabinet. “[He] urges all Haitian stakeholders to continue making progress in putting in place transitional governance arrangements, including the timely appointment of an interim Prime Minister and government, and the nomination of the members of the Provisional Electoral Council,” said the statement.
  • UN pays tribute to victims and survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The UN renewed its commitment to never forget the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda during a candle-lighting ceremony on Friday to mark 30 years since the horrific events there unfolded. The commemoration in the General Assembly Hall was held to remember the victims and honor the survivors and those who tried to stop the genocide. Focus was also on young people who have grown up in its shadow, and on countering hate speech which fuelled the killing and has become a growing global concern today.

  • Humankind must get away from the Cold War concept of a ‘space race’, even as commercial competition hots up to exploit the potential of the cosmos, the head of the UN Agency for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) has told UN News, on the International Day of Human Space Flight, when the former Soviet Union’s Yuri Gagarin reached orbit back in 1961.

  • Almost 55 million people are facing further food and nutrition insecurity in West and Central Africa during the region’s three-month lean season from June through August, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday. “The time to act is now. We need all partners to step up, engage, adopt and implement innovative programs to prevent the situation from getting out of control while ensuring no one is left behind,” said Margot Vandervelden, WFP’s Acting Regional Director for Western Africa.

The View from MSC: Sustainable Security in a Hot and Hungry World

In this episode, Nexus25 lead Michael Werz takes listeners to the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference where, in the age of a renewed Israel-Palestine conflict, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and debates over the China challenge, this year’s attendees attempted to broker agreements on the security implications of climate change - and how to build more resilient societies, militaries and food systems in response. Michael is joined by World Food Programme Berlin Director Dr. Martin Frick and Sudanese climate activist Nisreen Elsaim to discuss just how successful they were in addressing global food security - and what to keep an eye on in the multilateral space this spring.

Introducing Kavya Jain  (MPA, EPD, 2024)

Kavya works with the Indian Ambassador to the United Nations. Recently, she assisted the Ambassador in Chairing the 62nd Commission on Social Development, ECOSOC. She also interned with UNDP last semester. Before SIPA, Kavya finished law school in India, worked with the Parliament and volunteered with non-profits in India and Zambia. As an intern with the Indian Ambassador’s office, Kavya feels fortunate to attend meetings of various international groups and she is most curious about the dynamism of association between member states. Witnessing countries come together on a common subject while opposing each other on another remains the most exciting aspect of multilateralism for Kavya. It reinforces the value of shared experience across contexts, while allowing independence of beliefs. However, she strongly believes that multilateralism is only as successful as its representation of the current reality. This requires institutions like the United Nations to reflect changing geopolitical and cultural realities in the world.

Kavya holds a high school record of (fast) counting in Sanskrit. It has not been beaten in ten years now. Instagram  handle-  @kavyakavyakavya

Event Recap: The Evolution of Cybersecurity Threats for the United Nations System

On April 15, IO/UNS, the SIPA Cyber Program, and the Digital and Cyber Group hosted a talk on the Evolution of Cybersecurity for the United Nations System. Dr. Thomas Braun, who until January 2024, served as the chief of the UN Cybersecurity Service, traced the evolution of cybersecurity threats faced by the UN System over the last decades. Drawing on his experience establishing and overseeing the UN’s enterprise architecture program, chairing the UN system-wide information security special interest group, and in his previous capacity as the inaugural information security officer of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Braun shared how the UN's institutional awareness, understanding and response has progressed and how the organization has adjusted in terms of policies as well as technical and administrative risk mitigation measures. In conversation with SIPA Professor Beth Cartier, Dr. Braun discussed responsible state behavior in cyberspace and adherence to international humanitarian law. Moreover, Dr. Braun explained the common targets of the UN system-sensitive entities' list subject to sanctions imposed by the Security Council. In the debate with students and faculty, Dr. Braun highlighted the intersection of multilateral organizations and the cyber realm, collaboration with the private sector and the role of the UN's neutrality in this domain. If you missed the event, you can watch the recording here.
