International Organizations and UN News #13/2025 - April 23, 2025

Dear IO/UNS Community,

We hope everyone you got to enjoy all the sunshine and blooming tulips this past week 🌷☀️. Believe it or not, we are now at the final stretch of the academic year with only two weeks of classes left! Be on the lookout for our End-of-the-Year Social that is planned for two weeks from now, you won't want to miss it! In the meantime, keep chugging and pushing along, and don't forget to cherish our final moments as classmates together. For all the better, the end is in sight!

This week, our University Senator shared a message in response to Acting President Shipman's call for a review of the University Senate, raising concerns about the implications for shared governance at Columbia. While reform may appear constructive, the move risks consolidating power among the Trustees and senior administration at the expense of the Senate - currently the only formal space where students, faculty, and staff have a collective voice in shaping university policy. The issue is not about representation, but about preserving the Senate's independence and its role in providing institutional accountability, especially during moments of uncertainty. All interested can attend the University Town Hall today, Wednesday, April 23, from 6-8pm, open to all CUID holders. The Student Affairs Committee is formally requesting that the Trustees, including Acting President Claire Shipman, participate in this town hall.

  • Members of the World Health Organization (WHO) have agreed the text of a legally binding treaty designed to better tackle future pandemics. The pact is meant to avoid the disorganisation and competition for resources seen during the Covid-19 outbreak. Key elements include the rapid sharing of data about new diseases, to ensure scientists and pharmaceutical companies can work more quickly to develop treatments and vaccines.

  • UNDP plans to deliver $1.3 billion over three years to support war-ravaged Syria, including by rebuilding infrastructure and backing digital start-ups.
  • In a new report,. OHCHR examines gaps with respect to the role of States and the private sector to prevent, address and mitigate the negative human rights impacts of arms transfers, including unregulated illicit arms transfers and diversion. Building on the intersessional workshop mandated by resolution 53/15, gaps are grouped into five categories, namely the lack of: good governance of the arms sector; safeguards against the authorization of prohibited transfers; due diligence by the private sector; effective prevention of negative human rights impacts resulting from arms transfers; and access to justice. In its conclusions and recommendations, OHCHR concludes that arms transfers are not a human rights-free zone and recommends future steps that should be taken.

  • Marking the tenth anniversary of both the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the landmark Paris Agreement, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Wednesday 16 April, highlighted the significant progress made over the past decade, while also acknowledging the substantial challenges that remain. Addressing the opening of an international forum in Hanoi on partnerships for green growth, DSG Mohammed emphasized the need for accelerated action to meet global climate and development goals.

Situation in South Sudan risks escalating into civil war amid rise in misinformation
"The situation in South Sudan remains precarious, with the threat of renewed civil war looming large. A growing concern, according to Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian, Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), is the dangerous spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, which continue to fuel instability in an already fragile environment.
He warned that even a single fake message shared on platforms like WhatsApp can trigger chaos, undermine peace efforts and deepen tensions between communities.
General Subramanian spoke to UN News’s Sachin Gaur and started by telling him about the key challenges the UN peacekeeping mission is facing in its efforts to maintain security."

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week we are excited to introduce Daniel Alvarez (MIA, 2025)!

His interest in multilateralism grew from its utility in preventing conflict. Key topics that interest him are multilateral security cooperation and issues at the intersection of economics and security. Regarding multilateral security cooperation, he believes when planned and executed carefully, it can be an indispensable tool for stability, for example surveillance cooperation for maritime transparency in East Asia. Regarding the intersection of economics and security, he believes multilateral economic agreements can increase the cost of conflict and thereby provide valuable time during escalating crises to explore solutions before one side weighs the option of war as less costly than finding an alternative.

During his time at the UN’s peacekeeping mission in Pristina, Kosovo, he experienced both how politics can paralyze multilateral initiatives for peacebuilding, and how determined IO employees can adapt to those constraints to still drive trust-building between communities struggling with deep seated hate and the aftermath of war atrocities. From this experience he learned the dire need for patience, creativity and industriousness whether dealing with a political dispute between member countries or a local dispute between ethnic groups.

You can connect with him at his Instagram here and LinkedIn here.

In case you missed it, last week's MiA think-piece was on Why There’s Always a Path to International Cooperation: Human Ultrasociality Matters in International Relations, where Mai’a K. Davis Cross, Dean’s Professor of Political Science, International Affairs, and Diplomacy and Director of the Center for International Affairs and World Cultures at Northeastern University draws on her new book, International Cooperation Against All Odds: The Ultrasocial World (2024, Oxford University Press) to show that time and time again, societal movements have galvanized citizens across the globe on the basis of compelling ideas that tap into our ultrasocial tendencies and imagine a better future.

You can read the full think-piece here and consider engaging with our announcements on LinkedIn and BlueSky.
