  • Dennis Francis concludes his term as the President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly. Speaking on the eve of the end of his mandate, Mr. Francis described his year at the helm of the UN’s main policy-making body as “an honour of lifetime”. “This has been a truly eventful session,” he said. Francis said that among the achievements of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly were the milestone declaration to accelerate investment in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as three resolutions on the Gaza conflict.
  • Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk delivered his annual global update yesterday, urging the international community to reject a “new normal” that upholds entrenched power structures at the expense of our common humanity. Speaking at the midway point of his four-year mandate, instead of his usual overview of specific country situations, Mr. Türk offered instead broader reflections about the current state of human rights. “It seems to me we are at a fork in the road,” he said. “We can either continue on our current path — a treacherous ‘new normal’ — and sleepwalk into a dystopian future. Or we can wake up and turn things around for the better, for humanity and the planet.”
  • Yesterday would have marked the first day of a new school year in Gaza, however, currently there are 630,000 children who are missing an education due to the ongoing attacks on Palestinians. Without any schools, there will be no graduations, and "young people are at risk of being exploited through child labor, early marriage, and other forms of abuse," as noted by UNICEF. In the West Bank region, 782,000 children are witnessing severe barriers to education, including extreme violence and "restricted movements." In addressing the severity of the situation, Adele Khodr, UNICEF's Middle East and North Africa Regional Director claims that "children in the Gaza Strip have lost their homes, family members, friends, safety and routine." The absence of schooling and education overall can have a detrimental effect on children's mental, physical and emotional health.
  • The Muslim Rohingya community is witnessing extreme discrimination and brutality, once again, due to the Myanmar military. Recurring "systematic atrocities," include severe attacks on civilians and sexual violence. Multiple airstrikes hit a market in the northern Shan state, killing more than a dozen people. In the Rakhine state, where 750,000 members of the Muslim Rohingya community were forced to flee to Bangladesh, is where many are still targeted and are trying to leave Myanmar itself. Ever since the 2021 coup, more than 3,080,000 people are estimated to be displaced, according to UNHCR. A measure is currently in place, known as the "Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM)," established by the UN Human Rights Council covering serious international crimes and violations of international law.

The Power of Our Choices: From War-Torn Childhood to Nobel Peace Prize Nominee

A Ugandan man, some of whose family and friends were abducted in the East African country, tells the story of his journey from war-torn childhood to becoming the youngest ever African nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Victor Ochen grew up in northern Uganda at a time when the Lord’s Resistance Army, or LRA, was terrorising the region with violent abductions, forced child soldier recruitment, and widespread atrocities against civilians.

For 21 years the focus of his life was survival, struggling to find enough to eat in a variety of internal displacement camps.

To mark International Youth Day, UN News’ Julia Foxen spoke to Mr. Ochen about how his choice of nonviolence at only 13 forever transformed his life, highlighting the immense vulnerability of youth in conflict zones alongside their potential to transform the future of society.

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week, we are excited to introduce Bahia Gatti (MIA, EPD, 2025).

Bahía’s interest in multilateralism and global governance is shaped by her experience with various organizations, including the EU, UNDP, OAS, the Government of Córdoba in Argentina, Comic Relief, UNOY, and the EU-LAC Foundation in Germany. Her roles with these organizations have highlighted the effectiveness of collaborative approaches in addressing complex global issues. As a Youth Panelist for the EU’s Youth Empowerment Fund, she has witnessed how supporting youth-led initiatives can drive sustainable development. Her work with Comic Relief and UNOY further underscores the importance of incorporating diverse voices into decision-making processes. Bahía is particularly focused on youth participation, development, diplomacy, and education. She believes that multilateral frameworks are crucial for pooling resources and expertise, leading to more equitable and impactful solutions.

Bahía traveled to the Institute for the Promotion of Latin America and the Caribbean (IPDAL) in Portugal during the summer, thanks to the SIPA International Travel stipend, where she worked on economic diplomacy, connecting European investors with governments in the Global South. She was also recently a speaker at the ECOSOC Youth Forum at the UN, where her address focused on preventing superficial participation, advancing the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) Agenda, and increasing funding for youth-led initiatives. You can follow Bahia on LinkedIn at or on Instagram: @bahiagatti

UN Climate Mobility Summit - Volunteer Opportunity

The UN Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) is holding a Climate Mobility Summit on the sidelines of the UNGA on 25 and 26 September. The GCCM is asking for volunteers to support the Summit.

This is not a paid position but it would provide great access to a high-level meeting (last year, there were some 20 heads of state) and interesting insights into UNGA side events (and of course cutting-edge discussions on Climate Migration/Mobility). During the Summit, there will be plenty of time for students to participate in the Summit by attending panels and networking.

To accomodate your academic needs (esp classes) the organizers are giving four time slots, though the organizers would prefer having a few volunteers there for the entire day. You can check the Summit's Concept Note for more details and if interested, please fill out this form by Sept 11.

TENTATIVE DATE - Sat, October 5, 2024, ALL DAY

IO/UNS Fall Retreat

WHAT TO EXPECT: The retreat takes place at Columbia's beautiful Lamont Campus, an hour away from our Morningside campus. We will be spending time discussing, chatting, and getting to know each other in the Gary C. Comer building that won multiple design awards. We have our own deck overlooking trees and will go for a hike to a waterfall and shoreline of the Hudson River through the local sanctuary forest. Select guest speakers will join us and there will be many opportunities for building our community.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE UN'S LANDMARK SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE 2024

1. What is the Summit of the Future?

After the 75th anniversary of the UN, a conversation emerged over "hopes and fears for the future" four years later. This major event took place last year in September at the New York UN Headquarters prior to the high-level debate of the General Assembly.

From Covid-19 to now, UN Member States are calling upon Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to create a plan for the future of multilateralism. He came up with "Our Common Agenda," a report that addresses global risks and threats. With an emphasis on sustainable development, youth and future generations, etc., the ultimate outcome is expected to be a "Pact for the Future," "Global Digital Compact," and a "Declaration for Future Generations."

2. Why does the Summit matter?
The Summit of the Future offers a chance to deliver on its promises, and create trust between leaders, younger generations and other global actors. Everyone is needed to make multilateral cooperation possible when it comes to addressing the world's most pressing concerns.

3. Who are the key players?
There will be two "Action Days" preceding the Summit. These representatives consist of civil-society members, private sectors, academia, local authorities, youth, etc. As someone noted, "this summit is for and by everyone."

4. What happens next?
Many of the discussions and ideas held during the Summit will need to time to "flourish" as it is the "beginning of a process." After the Summit, the focus will be on implementing the ideas addressed in the "Pact for the Future."

5. How can I get involved?

The UN is hosting a global campaign called "Act Now," which encourages people to call for a more sustainable and peaceful future. The UN Youth Office is also caling for young people to utilize #YouthLead as a way to push world leaders to make policymaking more inclusive.
