International Organizations and UN News #16/2023 - September 12, 2023

Dear IO/UNS Community,

We hope you had an amazing and productive first week of classes!

Every year September marks the closing of the old session and opening of the new session of the UN General assembly (UNGA). The 78th session (2023 - 2024) of UNGA has opened on 05 September 2023 under the theme, "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all".

His Excellency Dennis Francis, Permanent Representive of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations (pictured above), has succeded Csaba Kőrösi, to serve as President of the 78th Session of the General Assembly. His Excellency Dennis Francis has underscored that as “climate, conflict, and poverty continue to make peace more elusive,” geopolitical divides “have forced many countries to navigate a narrow strategic space to drive change for their societies.”

The General debate of the 78th session will be held from Tuesday, 19 September to Saturday, 23 September, and on Tuesday, 26 September 2023. A full programme schedule for the session can be found here.

Event Recap: IO/UNS Back-to-School Social

Thank you to all the energetic attendees of our Fall 2023 Back-to-School Social at Amity Hall past Thursday. We enjoyed getting to know the new students, catching up with returning students and sightings of some of our beloved alumni. The floor was abuzz with vibrant discussions on multilateralism, global cooperation, human rights, what keeps up awake at night and campus tips. We were excited to see more than 100 students chat with Professor Daniel Naujoks. We know choosing amongst various concurrent social events is never easy. Nevertheless, our Back-to-School Social was so fun because of all of you!

Multilateralism in an age of crises

In Multilateralism in an age of crises – Where do countries at the last mile of development fit in? Habib Ur Rehman Mayar, Deputy General Secretary of the Group of Seven Plus (g7+), draws on the experience of the g7+ to demand more inclusive, representative, and democratic multilateral solutions that are founded on the aspiration of human solidarity. Compounding global crises related to peace & security, economics. sovereign debt, the Covid-19 pandemic, and climate change disproportionately affect the poorest and conflict-affected countries. While there is increasing demand for multilateralism to address such global crises, two key factors limit the effectiveness of multilateral processes. International politics lacks solidarity and is characterized by increasing polarity among the major global powers that are driven by the cold-hearted pursuit of national interest at the cost of shared humanity prosperity. In addition, multilateral systems and solutions are not multilateral enough to address the challenges facing fragile countries.

Drawing on the experience of the g7+ ––an inter-governmental association of 20 conflict-affected countries––Mayar offers suggestions on how to devise multilateral processes that allow us to address the contemporary crises that threaten us.

Transforming education: Overcoming crisis, improving learning outcomes

Educational poverty in low- and middle-income countries has reached a tipping point; 53 percent of children are unable to read and understand a story by the end of primary school. This requires an ambitious transformation of the education sector, which is still recovering from the impact of school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. But returning to the pre-COVID status quo isn’t enough, and ambitious learning recovery and acceleration are needed if we are to have a shot at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030. The current education system is at capacity and the demand is only set to increase, with nearly 750 million children expected to be of school age by 2060. This shift will strain education budgets and increase the need for sustained investment in quality education. But the education gap is also a data gap. According to UNESCO, there is no information on the learning levels of two-thirds of children across sub-Saharan Africa. Gathering and analyzing data is an essential first step for improving learning outcomes, and recent interventions show that progress is possible if efforts focus on classroom practices informed by evidence and data that’s tangible and easy to interpret for teachers and policymakers alike.

This event, co-hosted by Devex and NewGlobe on the occasion of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, will explore outcomes to help improve the quality of education in low- and middle-income countries. It will also shine a light on what’s needed to equip everyone from teachers to education ministries with the data tools needed to drive improved learning outcomes for all.
