  • 27 January marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and Holocaust Remembrance Day. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said the essence of commemorations was to acknowledge the past but they “must also examine the present and look to the future.” Underlying the rise of hateful rhetoric, with rising antisemitism on the streets and online, the UN rights chief further expressed that “discrimination and dehumanisation are winning out over solidarity and compassion; diversity is viewed as a threat rather than something to be treasured; and many leaders are undermining and weakening the rule of law.”

  • An emergency Security Council meeting was called on 26 January due to increased violence and killings in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo amid peacekeeper and civilian deaths, along with sharp calls for action from top UN officials. Head of UN peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, Bintou Keita says "we are trapped" and calls for immediate action to end the crisis.

  • Top UN officials in Lebanon are calling for compliance with the ongoing ceasefire after reports that Israeli forces killed 15 people, including a Lebanese soldier, along the buffer zone with Israel, which Israel was due to withdraw from on Sunday under the agreement. The timelines mentioned in the November ceasefire agreement “have not been met”, according to a joint statement by UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and head of the UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, and force commander Aroldo Lázaro. The agreement between Israel and armed group Hezbollah had been reached after more than a year of fighting, stemming from the Israeli war in Gaza. “As seen tragically this morning, conditions are not yet in place for the safe return of citizens to their villages along the Blue Line,” they said, referring to the buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon.

  • On 25 January, Trump administration memo tells USAID to put "America First" in reviewing foreign aid. It threatened "disciplinary action" for any staff ignoring the administration's orders.

  • More than 1,100 UN peacekeepers are currently deployed in the Golan, a demilitarised zone along the Israel-Syria border at what is a tense and dangerous time in the history of the region. One of the UN’s longest-standing peacekeeping missions – the UN Disengagement Observer Force, known by its acronym UNDOF – began more than a half century ago when the 1973 Middle East crisis erupted. The Agreement on Disengagement between Israeli and Syrian forces was concluded after providing an area of separation for two equal zones of limited forces and armaments on both sides of the area. UNDOF was established to supervise its implementation. On 17 January, the acting mission chief Mr. Gauchat told the Security Council that “it is imperative that the UN peacekeepers are allowed to carry out their mandated tasks without obstruction,” urging all parties to maintain the ceasefire and respect the terms of the 1974 agreement.

  • 24 January marks the International Day of Education. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasized learning as a basic human right and foundation for individual and societal growth. His message highlighted the dual nature of technological advances such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), which offer immense potential – but also pose considerable risks. “Education is an essential building block for every person to reach their full potential, and for societies and economies to grow and flourish”, Mr. Guterres said.

Benjamin Perks | Love is the One Thing that Solves Everything (Season 10, Episode 4) - Awake at Night, Podcast with Melissa Fleming

Having overcome a childhood marked by violence, abuse and neglect, Benjamin Perks has always drawn strength from an innate sense of optimism. Now Head of Campaigns and Advocacy at UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, he helps protect young people in similar situations all over the world.

“I think it was very clear that we were in a bad spot, though, being dealt a bad hand, but I was somehow optimistic that things would be better.”

Benjamin Perks, author of his new book, Trauma Proof, reflects in this episode on a lifetime campaigning for all children to be safe, seen, and soothed, and on how an encounter with a special teacher put his life back on track.

“When I held my son in my arms, I knew that what had happened to me was now unimaginable to myself… that made me ask the question, if I can heal from it, if I can recover and not transmit it to my child, can we do this for the whole of humanity?”

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week we are excited to introduce Vato Peradze (MIA, 2026)!

As an advisor intern at the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the UN, Vato has developed a deep interest in multilateralism and global governance due to their vital role in addressing shared global challenges. Georgia’s geopolitical realities, including unresolved territorial conflicts and the pursuit of Euro-Atlantic integration, have shown him the importance of collective action, diplomacy, and rule-based international cooperation to safeguard sovereignty and promote peace.

Key issues of interest to him include conflict resolution, sustainable development, and international security, particularly in the context of small states navigating complex global systems. Vato believes that multilateral institutions, when effectively managed, are indispensable for creating inclusive solutions to global inequality, fostering stability, and strengthening international law.

His experiences as an intern in the Parliament of Georgia and at Columbia University’s SIPA have deepened his understanding of international decision-making and policy analysis. Working closely with diplomatic representatives, Vato has gained firsthand insight into how states advocate for their interests while collaborating on common goals. This role has further solidified his commitment to advancing Georgia’s voice in multilateral level and his belief in the transformative power of collective action to address humanity’s most pressing issues.

You can follow Vato on LinkedIn @Vato Peradze!
