  • UNEP warned in its Adaptation Gap Report 2024: Come Hell and High Water, that vulnerable communities are already bearing the brunt of climate change impacts through extreme weather and disasters. “Climate change is already devastating communities across the world, particularly the most poor and vulnerable.” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. “People, their livelihoods and the nature upon which they depend are in real danger from the consequences of climate change. Without action, this is a preview of what our future holds and why there simply is no excuse for the world not to get serious about adaptation, now.

  • UNRWA’s, the agency for Palestinian refugees, ability to provide any kind of aid or services has been severely hit. This is mainly due to Israeli authorites restricting access that prevents UNRWA from distributing supplies. The head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, announced in October 2024 that about 30 humanitarian trucks were entering Gaza every day – just six per cent of the amount of commercial and humanitarian supplies allowed in before the war.

  • President-elect Donald Trump nominated Republican Representative Elise Stefanik to be the U.S. ambassador of the UN. “I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump said. “Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.” For reference, Stefanik was one of the most aggressive representatives questioniing President of Columbia University Minouche Shafik during the congressional hearing of the  Education and the Workforce Committee in April 2024. MSNBC states that "Stefanik’s sole contribution to foreign affairs recently has been her extremely vocal defense of Israel as it continues its onslaught against Gaza."

  • As of today, 1.4 million people and more than 875,000 people have now been internally displaced across Lebanon. Before violence escalated in October, Lebanon was already suffering from chronic economic problems, linked to COVID-19 and a long-running political crisis. The war has made the situation far worse, with damage estimated at $12 billion across the economy including buildings and infrastructure. Nearly one in four people in Lebanon have been impacted by the conflict which escalated on 23 September.

  • “Let’s dispense with any idea that climate finance is charity;” runaway climate change is impacting “every single individual in the world one way or another,” said UN Climate Chief, Simon Stiell to negotiators at COP29 in Baku. The latest round of UN climate talks will run in the Azerbaijan capital of Baku, from today through next Friday, 22 November, and will cover the new annual climate financing target to replace the $100 billion pledge set in 2009, which is expiring this year and which many say is far less than what is needed to cope with fast-rising global temperatures.

Resilence: The Global Adaptation Podcast
Episode 7: How Innovation is Tackling Climate Change

"Welcome to RESILIENCE, the podcast that brings you inspiring stories from people all over the world who are adapting to climate change in practical, creative and innovative ways. We’ve all heard the doom and gloom, but this podcast is about looking forward as we explore the best solutions and cutting-edge technologies for building resilience to climate change.

In each episode you’ll hear the world’s greatest climate experts talk about the hottest topics – how award-winning African architects are changing the future of climate-resilient buildings, the use of artificial intelligence to help farmers grow food in tough conditions, and the power of forests in protecting people against the impacts of extreme weather.

This podcast is brought to you by the UN Environment Programme’s Global Adaptation Network. Join us as we adapt to climate change one conversation at a time…

Can we innovate our way out of the climate crisis? How did the Netherlands become the world’s greatest innovators for flood control? How do we finance the best climate solutions? Nadege Trocellier from the UN Climate Technology Centre and Network sheds light on what innovation looks like in the world of climate adaptation. And leading expert Omar Saleh talks about a fascinating adaptation solution called SLAMDAM – a flexible, portable flood barrier designed to rapidly protect communities from flooding."

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week, we are excited to introduce Paloma Camelo (MIA, HRHP, 2025)!

Paloma is a second-year MIA student from Colombia. Her background is in Political Science and International Relations, and she also has a Master's in Peacebuilding. Most of her work experience has been in the public sector, mainly in Human Rights, Peacebuilding, and Transitional Justice.

Right now, she's interning at the UN in the Department of Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, working with the Policy, Strategy and Partnerships team. She's getting more and more interested in how peace and finance can work together, especially through partnerships across different sectors to create social impact. Looking ahead, Paloma would like to explore opportunities in the private sector where she can work more on building these cross-sector partnerships.
