  • After two weeks of intense negotiations, delegates (from rich countries) at COP29, pledged to contribute at least $300 billion annually to the global fight against climate change as UN climate talks came to an end early Sunday morning last week in Baku. Member States agreed to donate this amount annually until the climate financing target goal of "at least $1.3 trillion is reached by 2035." Developing nations who had sought over $1 trillion in assistance called the agreement “insulting” and argued it did not give them the vital resources they required to truly address the complexities of the climate crisis.

  • On December 2, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, urged Georgian authorities to respect and protect rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, following four nights of protests impaired by violence. The legitimate protests were affected by disproportionate and, in some cases, unnecessary force by the police in the capital, Tbilisi. Multiple protesters and media workers were reportedly injured during the demonstrations sparked by a prime ministerial announcement postponing negotiations on joining the EU until the end of 2028.
  • Despite the recent ceasefire deal that emerged between Israel and Lebanon, in North-west Syria, renewed fighting last week led by the terrorist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and other armed factions, has engulfed parts of Aleppo, Idlib and Hama, destabilising frontlines that had been in stalemate since 2020. The UN Secretary-General has expressed alarm over the sharp escalation of violence across northwest Syria, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to the UN-facilitated political process. Syria’s conflict is now entering its 14th year, and in 2024, an estimated 16.7 million people will require humanitarian assistance – the highest figure since the crisis began in 2011.

  • There is a call for urgent international intervention in Myanmar as civilian deaths hit 6,000 since the military junta seized power in February 2021 following a coup, leading to mass civilian resistance and international condemnation. "There are now 6,000 reminders that the international community is failing the people of Myanmar,” the Human Rights Council-appointed experts stated in a news release on Monday. “It is time for a change, starting with moving this disaster out of the shadows of international attention”.
  • Last week, the UN Alliance of Civilizations convened its 10th Global Forum in an effort to bridge gaps between divided communities around the world. The three-day forum drew more than 1,800 participants from more than 150 countries, with an announcment that the 11th Global Forum will be held in Saudi Arabia. The message, from second graders and octogenarians to imams, rabbis, young changemakers and the King of Spain, was clear: “we need peace and mutual understanding now more than ever before." Emerging from the discussions, the Cascais Declaration, was further adopted unanimously on Tuesday, establishing a set of innovative pledges to forge peace amid current turbulent times.

  • December 1, marked World AIDS Day, serving as a reminder of the global fight against the pandemic while commemorating lives lost and celebrating progress. "Ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 is within reach, but only if global leaders commit to dismantling barriers to healthcare and upholding human rights," according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He further claims that “every 25 seconds, someone in the world is infected with HIV.” He further calls for a "rights-based approach" to HIV prevention and treatment.

Event Recap: How to Get a Job at the UN

On November 13th, Professor Daniel Naujoks, director of SIPA’s International Organization and UN Studies Specialization, hosted a career talk on “How to Get a Job at the UN.” Over a pizza lunch, he spoke to a full house of SIPA students interested in a role with the United Nations. Prof. Naujoks shared tips and tricks for a successful job hunt, based on more than 20 years of experience working with many different UN agencies.

Topics covered include an overview of what to expect when working for the UN, including organizational culture and structure; how to build a resume that stands out; employment pathways; networking; and how to prepare for an interview. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, most of which were in relation to their search for a summer internship or post-graduate opportunity.

You can read more about the event and find more resources on free UN courses, information on YPP programs and more here and watch the recording here.

COP29 delivers climate finance boost, but much more needed to help developing nations cope with the crisis

"Just 35 hours later than advertised, the UN Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan wrapped up, with an agreement to triple the amount of climate finance paid to developing nations to $300 billion per year, by 2035.

The deal is a definite step forward, but the final sum is far less than the $1.3 trillion that climate experts say these countries need in order to adapt to the crisis.

On this episode, we look back at the second and final week of COP29, what was achieved, and what comes next.

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week, we are excited to introduce Fadelia Debi Subandi (MPA-DP, 2025)!

Fadelia is interested in multilateralism and global governance because she believes it is one of the ways in which we can address development inequality between countries. For example, in tackling gaps in the SDGs, such as financing. Over the summer, she was privileged to learn more about the preparatory process for next year’s 4th Financing for Development Conference, during which her team conducted research on how to incentivize investors and remove barriers to support emerging markets and developing countries.

During Fadelia's internship at the Financing for Sustainable Development Office within UN DESA, she had the opportunity to support the Strategic Engagement and Policy Integration Branch (SEPIB) in their Global Investors for Sustainable Development (GISD) Alliance Secretariat -- check out the GISD Alliance! https://gisdalliance.org/ Another fun fact: Unfortunately, she can't drink coffee, so she likes to try matcha lattes around NYC!

You can follow her on Instagram @fadeliadeby!

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is making headlines after it issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense chief, as well as a Hamas leader, Ibrahim Al-Masri, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict. Beyond the breaking news of the arrest warrants, in the latest Multilateralism in Action think-piece How international interveners cooperate: The UN and the International Criminal Court, Tom Buitelaar shows how the ICC cooperates with UN peace operations. In fact, nearly all large UN peacekeeping missions in the past decade have had the mandate to aid the fight against impunity for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. However, based on this recent book Assisting International Justice (Oxford University Press, 2024), Buitelaar argues that cooperating with the ICC also risks undermining core principles of UN peacekeeping, specifically with regard to peacekeepers’ impartiality and their need to operate with the consent of the parties. In addition, some fear that war crimes prosecutions undermine one of the core tasks of peace operations: bringing stability and supporting a political process that leads to peace. Because of these tensions, peacekeepers have delivered inconsistent support to ICC efforts. Interestingly, Buitelaar finds that the variation in support can best be explained by looking at a combination of mandates, international support, and the expected impacts on stability and the relations with the government, on the one hand, and the agency and preferences of those in leadership positions in UN peace operations, on the other.

The relationship between the UN and the ICC shows the problems that can emerge when a multiplicity of international interveners engage in conflict zones, even if they come from the same liberal international framework. The differing values and goals introduce fundamental and unavoidable dilemmas, while the compromises adopted to address these cause unintended consequences of themselves.

Read the full think-piece here and feel free to engage with our announcements on LinkedIn and BluSky.
