  • On 29 January, the junta-led West African nations of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have formally withdrawn from the regional bloc known as ECOWAS. The previously announced withdrawal, which marks the culmination of a yearlong process during which the group tried to avert an unprecedented disintegration, “has become effective today,” ECOWAS said in a statement. However, the bloc said that it has also decided to “keep ECOWAS’ doors open,” and requested member nations to continue to accord the trio their membership privileges, including free movement within the region with an ECOWAS passport.

  • On Monday, 3 February, UNRWA, the UN agency that assists Palestine refugees, warned in a statement that hostilities escalating in the occupied West Bank are putting the ceasefire in Gaza at risk. It came a day after Israeli Security Forces (ISF) carried out a series of controlled detonations at the Jenin refugee camp, located in the northern West Bank, destroying large areas there “in a split second”. UNRWA said it received no prior warning of the explosions “as contact between staff and Israeli authorities is no longer permitted - putting civilian lives at risk.”

  • On Monday, 3 February, WHO warned that the worsening security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has forced many mpox patients to flee treatment centres, increasing the risk of transmission. Before the latest violence, mpox cases had been stabilizing, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a speech to the agency’s executive board.

  • Today, President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order withdrawing the U.S. from the U.N. Human Rights Council and prohibiting future funding for the U.N. relief agency for Gaza, according to a document obtained by POLITICO. This exective order, which reinstates policies in place during the last Trump administration, comes on the day the president is set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.

Celeste Saulo | How to Save Humanity from Climate Breakdown (Season 10, Episode 5) - Awake at Night, Podcast with Melissa Fleming

Celeste Saulo, the current Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is seeing climate breakdown warp global weather systems beyond recognition, with devastating impacts on countless lives and livelihoods.

“We can see how many people are suffering…We can see that people are running out of food, are running out of water, and the real narrative is that this will affect everyone sooner or later.”

The United Nations Secretary General has issued a red alert for the planet after a full decade of record-breaking heat driven by human activity. In this episode, Celeste Saulo reflects on our shared responsibility to future generations, on an emotional meeting with the Pope, and on why she can never give up hope.

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week we are excited to introduce Abi Insani (MPA, 2026)!

His interest in multilateralism and global governance stems from his professional experience in the United Nations, where he is currently working as a Data Analyst intern at Department of Operational Support (DOS) of UN Secretariat, which oversees logistical support for all UN Peacekeeping missions. He has witnessed firsthand the complexities of UN Peacekeeping operations, particularly their logistical challenges and sustainability goals. The intricate coordination required to ensure fuel, ration supplies, and renewable energy integration in peacekeeping missions highlights the necessity of effective global governance.

Key issues that captivate him include keeping up the UN's SDG in peacekeeping, climate resilience in conflict zones, and the broader implications of energy access on global security. He firmly believes that multilateral cooperation is essential for addressing these challenges, as no single entity can tackle them alone. Collaboration among nations, international organizations, and private sectors is crucial for fostering sustainable and efficient solutions and pursuing Sustainable Development Goals.
