  • During the turbulent early years of Timor-Leste’s independence, the UN was a constant presence, helping to maintain peace and stability. Twenty-four years on, the country has made the successful transition from a host nation for UN peacekeeping operations, to one that contributes to supporting missions elsewhere.

  • Since 26 January, nearly 3,000 people have been killed and 2,880 injured in attacks by the M23 and their allies “with heavy weapons used in populated areas, and intense fighting against the armed forces of the DRC and their allies”, UN human rights chief Volker Türk said, as UN Member States weighed setting up a fact-finding mission to investigate extreme rights violations still being committed in the DRC provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu. “If nothing is done, the worst may be yet to come, for the people of the eastern DRC, but also beyond the country’s borders,” he told a Special Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
  • US aid funding cuts put HIV prevention at risk, warns UNAIDS. The US pause in foreign assistance funding has created “confusion” in the vital work of community HIV prevention, despite a waiver issued for HIV/AIDS programmes, the UN agency to combat the still deadly disease said on Friday, 07 February.

  • On Tuesday, February 4, President Trump signed an executive order directing the withdrawal of the US from certain UN organizations and ending their funding. The order also mandates a review of U.S. support for all international organizations. Specifically, it withdraws the UN bodies from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and stops all funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). It also specifies a review of the exit from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This decision follows the administration's earlier executive orders to initiate the 1-year process to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Agreement.

Catherine Russell | Protecting Children in Crisis (Season 10, Episode 7) - Awake at Night, Podcast with Melissa Fleming

Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, often bears witness to the stories of tens of millions of children and young people suffering around the world, yet shares causes for optimism and hope wherever she finds it.

“Children just want to be children. No matter what, the bleakest situation, the most terrible things, they still want to play right? They want to find some joy. They want to just be kids, and I think that's what we have to all work to protect.”

2024 was one of the worst years on record for children in conflict, a devastating statistic that the United Nations is refusing to accept as a deadly new normal. In this episode, Catherine Russell reflects on the impacts of childhood trauma, the limits of human resilience, and looks back on a childhood spent trick-or-treating for UNICEF.

You can listen to the podcast here.

First-Year Survey for Capstone Preferences

14 - 24 February 2025

Attention all First-Year MIA/MPA and MPA DP students! The SIPA Capstone Survey will be open for first-year and fall students from February 14-24.
The SIPA Capstone workshop preference survey is intended to be completed by all first-year and fall graduate students in the MIA, MPA, and MPA DP degree program (other than EPD students who have their own survey that will be sent from the EPD Director). This is an important tool that allows students to directly voice their opinion for the development of the next round of Capstone workshops. The survey asks students to rank order their preferences of past Capstone projects and to suggest new clients/topics for the next academic year (Fall Preliminary Short Course and Spring 2026 cycle of projects).

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and will be available on the SIPA website from February 14 - 24th. Students are welcome to list any organization or company that is of interest; it is not necessary to restrict your selection to past clients or topics or to those available within your concentration. Students are then asked to consider what organizations and topics would be of interest for a Capstone project in the coming year.  Please be as specific as possible in your responses.

Please note: we will make every effort to satisfy the demands of the students; however it may not be possible to accommodate every workshop request. Unfortunately, a number of factors in addition to student demand influence whether a particular organization partners with SIPA for a workshop, such as the interest and ability of the organization to engage the time and resources necessary to participate in a workshop.

You can find access to the survey starting 14 February here.

The Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) provides a unique opportunity to reform financing at all levels, including to support reform of the international financial architecture. The Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development will be held in Conference Room 3 of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. United Nations & International Organizations Roundtable Conversations
IAB 1501

Building on the success of the previous years' event, this year's United Nations & International Organizations Roundtable Conversations gives students the opportunity to speak with 20+ staff members from a range of international organizations in intimate small group discussions.

Unlike other networking events, the roundtable conversation format will ensure that students have significant facetime with three IO officials, opening the door for meaningful relationship building. About 6-8 students will share a roundtable with one of our featured experts to discuss their work and experiences on the role of international organizations to foster development, cooperation, peace, human rights, climate change, and prosperity. Students will spend 30min each at three roundtables to enable them to have a range of conversations.

After 3 rounds of structured roundtables, all participants are invited to join the reception on the 15th floor that allows participants to connect with other experts.

***Please make sure you can attend the entire 2 hours of the event from 5-7pm. Given the nature of the even it is not possible to join parts of it.
***Please ensure you only register for 1 ticket. Also note that the roundtable tickets count toward the reception; therefore, please do not register for a reception ticket if you have registered for a roundtable ticket. Thank you**
