  • Last Thursday, 13 February, parliamentarians gathered at UN Headquarters in New York to assess the state of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting, themed Scaling up Action for the Sustainable Development Goals: Finance, Institutions and Politics, underscored the urgency of rebooting the 2030 Agenda. “We are far behind from where we need to be on almost every single one of the SDGs,” said President of the General Assembly Philémon Yang. With only 17 percent of SDG targets reportedly on track, the discussions revealed sharp divides over priorities and outlook. Some called for renewed commitment; others questioned whether the goals should be replaced entirely.
  • Also on 13 February, Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, told the Security Council a lasting peace is still possible in Yemen but requires commitment, courage, and action from all sides.Grundberg briefed on latest political developments in the country, where Houthi rebels, also known as Ansar Allah, and Government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have been battling for power for more than a decade. He spoke alongside UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher who updated on the “perilous” humanitarian situation there and the need to protect aid workers.

  • On Saturday, 16 February, UN Secretary-General António Guterres' delivered remarks to the high-level African Union (AU) summit. He emphasized Africa and its young population's potential and called for global reforms to right the injustices of the past. Mr. Guterres was speaking on the first day of the annual meeting of the regional organization, held at African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, amid conflict and tensions in several AU member states, notably Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “The partnership between the United Nations and the African Union has never been stronger,” said the UN chief, striking a positive tone from the outset. “Together, we see an Africa brimming with hope and possibility.”

  • UN officials on Monday asked for $6 billion for Sudan this year from donors to help ease what they called the world's worst ever hunger catastrophe and the mass displacement of people brought on by civil war. The U.N. appeal represents a rise of more than 40% from last year's for Sudan at a time when aid budgets around the world are under strain, partly due to a pause in funding announced by US President Donald Trump last month that has affected life-saving programs across the globe.
  • Last Tuesday, IO/UNS director Professor Daniel Naujoks moderated a side event on From Copenhagen to Doha: Advancing the Global Social Development Agenda on the margins of the 63rd Session of the Commission for Social Development. The discussion focused on actionable ideas for the Second World Summit for Social Development 2025 to be held in November this year in Doha, focusing on poverty eradication, productive employment, and social inclusion. Emphasizing human rights, the event explored partnerships and support for vulnerable groups. You can watch the event recording here.

Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda | Women's Rights Are Human Rights (Season 10, Episode 8) - Awake at Night, Podcast with Melissa Fleming

After growing up in war-torn rural Zimbabwe, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda overcame extreme hardship to pursue a career at the highest levels of the United Nations. As the current UN Assistant Secretary-General, and one of two deputy executive directors of UN Women, she wants little girls everywhere to aspire to the same heights.

“Peace is a prerequisite. It's so critical for development… for unleashing the potential of the little girls. Peace is so important for enabling mothers, widows to give the best they can.”

UN Women works to uphold women’s human rights and ensure that every woman and girl lives up to her full potential. In this episode, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda reflects on a childhood touched by war, poverty and disease, on a lifelong love of learning, and on how a recent accident gave her a new perspective on inequality.

You can listen to the podcast here.

United Nations & International Organizations Roundtable Conversations
IAB 1501

Building on the success of the previous years' event, this year's United Nations & International Organizations Roundtable Conversations gives students the opportunity to speak with 20+ staff members from a range of international organizations in intimate small group discussions.

Unlike other networking events, the roundtable conversation format will ensure that students have significant facetime with three IO officials, opening the door for meaningful relationship building. About 6-8 students will share a roundtable with one of our featured experts to discuss their work and experiences on the role of international organizations to foster development, cooperation, peace, human rights, climate change, and prosperity. Students will spend 30min each at three roundtables to enable them to have a range of conversations.

After 3 rounds of structured roundtables, all participants are invited to join the reception on the 15th floor that allows participants to connect with other experts.

***Please make sure you can attend the entire 2 hours of the event from 5-7pm. Given the nature of the even it is not possible to join parts of it.
***Please ensure you only register for 1 ticket. Also note that the roundtable tickets count toward the reception; therefore, please do not register for a reception ticket if you have registered for a roundtable ticket. Thank you**
