Dear IO/UNS Community,

We want to thank everyone for attending our 6th annual UN and IO Roundtable Conversations Networking Event last week! We hope you all had a great time getting to meet several guests both during the networking sessions and the reception.

The photo in this newsletters' header shows the divided global community in yesterday's UN General Assembly resolution on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in which the US voted with Russia, Belarus, North Korea and 14 other countries against the resolution (for more details, see the IO news section below).

Coming up next is our annual IO/UNS Spring Retreat! Be sure to apply by Thursday, 6 March at 12pm.

Event Recap: UN and IO Roundtable Conversations Networking Event

Thank you to everyone who attended our big event of the year! This past Wednesday, 19 February 2025, IO/UNS hosted our 6th Annual UN and International Organizations Roundtable Conversations Networking Event! Building on the success of the previous years' event, this year's United Nations & International Organizations Roundtable Conversations gave students the opportunity to engage with 27 staff members from a variety of UN funds, programs and agencies and international organizations in intimate small group discussions. This year, we had a record 140 students join the roundtable discussions and another 50 who joined us for  the reception!

Students were given the opportunity to have longer conversations with three UN/IO officials, opening the door for meaningful relationship building. Many of our guest speakers discussed their work and experiences on the role of international organizations to foster development, cooperation, peace, human rights, climate change, and prosperity. Afterwards, UN experts, students, and faculty were invited to engage with one another at a reception! We thank all of our guest for coming to speak with students, and we thank you, the students, for attending this event! We hope you all enjoyed it.

  • UN demands Russia pull troops out of Ukraine but the US wants a softer approach. On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UN General Assembly voted yesterday on dueling resolutions — Ukraine’s European-backed proposal demanding an immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from the country and a US call for a swift end to the war which never mentions Moscow’s aggression. The final vote supported the European proposal with 93 votes. But the divisions in the global community are clearly visible. 18 countries including the US, Russia, Belarus and North Korea voted against the resolution, while a high number of 65 countries abstained.
  • Later on Monday, the Security Council adopted a US-drafted resolution on Russia's invasion in Ukraine that takes a neutral position on the conflict. The resolution was adopted with 10 votes in favor, while France, Britain, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia abstained.

  • On 17 February, in Addis Ababa, the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU CEVAWG) was adopted and celebrated by UN Women. This convention is the first "legal instrument" and is key in preventing and eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls. The 2025 Beijing +30 Africa Regional Review shows that there is uneven progress towards gender equality across the continent, and the data shows there are high levels of violence against women and girls.

  • In addition to Trump cutting all foreign aid assistance, especially USAID, the US Mission to UN Agencies issued a letter to the World Food Programme (WFP) on what they expect from them in exchange for funding. On 18 February, the letter asks WFP to alter any gender ideology, remove the DEI from their program, and climate change initiatives. They are hoping these changes can be reflected not only in WFP but in the UN system as well.

  • On 21 February, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution that strongly condemned the ongoing offensive by M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Council demanded that the M23 immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from all areas that it controls, “and fully reverse the establishment of illegitimate parallel administrations in the DRC territory.”

Frontier Model Forum (Episode 9): Addressing the risk of misuse through red teaming

This episode explores how AI companies can mitigate the risk of misuse of their product through red teaming. Guest, Chris Maserole, is director of the Frontier Model Forum (FMF), an industry organization co-founded by big AI companies to facilitate private sector cooperation in AI safety. He will walk through what red-teaming is, and why and how companies that are part of the FMF have been conducting red teaming to detect malicious use of their most advance AI applications.

About the guest

Chris Meserole is the Executive Director of the Frontier Model Forum and an expert on AI safety, international governance, and global cooperation. He is currently focused on the development of standards and best practices for AI safety and evaluation, particularly for advanced models whose capability profile remains unknown. Transnational activists have played a crucial role in promoting multilateral action on climate change. They successfully lobbied states to negotiate the 2015 Paris Agreement, monitor states’ subsequent actions, “naming and shaming” countries that fail to fulfil national targets and campaign for states to tackle climate change at various international policy venues. In ๐——๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ง๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ป๐—ผ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜†: ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ข๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—–๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€ Professors Nina Hall and Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni draw on their new book Climate Activism, Digital Technologies, and Organizational Change (Cambridge University Press, 2024) to show how new digital technologies offer opportunities for activists and international organizations to campaign more effectively for climate action, but also pose significant risks. They argue that technologies such as satellites, social media, and artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities for activists to speed up and make their campaigns more efficient.

Climate organizations use social media to broadcast their messages and quickly spread content worldwide. They use so-called “analytic activism” to “test” campaigns, and to identify the most effective messages or strategic frame. And digital technology to facilitate new social movements. Hall and Eilstrup-Sangiovanni provide a rich analysis of how climate activists use digital technology to effectively influence multilateral and national actions.
