  • On March 4, at the UN General Assembly, the US declared that it "rejects and denounces the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals." The US representative argued that "Although framed in neutral language, Agenda 2030 & SDGs advance a program of soft global governance that is inconsistent with US sovereignty and adverse to the rights and interests of Americans." This is also because of President Trump's "course correction on 'gender' and climate ideology, which pervade the SDGs" the because, according to the official statement "globalist endeavors like Agenda 2030 and the SDGs lost at the ballot box." In the same statement, the US stressed that it could not support the concepts of 'peaceful coexistence’ or ‘dialogue among civilizations’ because it sees these concepts to be influenced by China's policy ideas.

  • On the same day, on March 4, the US was the only country in the world to vote against declaring July 12 the “International Day of Hope." While 161 Member States at the UN General Assembly approved resolution, 4 abstained, only the US voted against the resolution because the text “contains references to diversity, equity and inclusion that conflict with US policies that seek to eliminate all forms of discrimination and create equal opportunities for all.”

  • On 8 March, the world celebrated International Women's Day, and yet based on a recent report by UN Women, "in 2024, nearly a quarter of governments (one in four countries) worldwide reported backlash on women's rights." Their latest report, Women's Rights in Review 30 Years After Beijing, discusses progress made since the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This declaration was endorsed by 189 governments and covered the grounds for what action is needed to achieve gender equality. Since 1995, countries have enacted 1,531 legal reforms advancing gender equality and other women's rights.
  • From 10-21 March, the annual UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) gathers at UNHQ in New York to discuss the various inequalities, violence, and other challenges women continue to witness around the world. This year, the CSW celebrates 30 years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

  • Despite recent humanitarian efforts, "Israeli authorities have already began demolishing more than 16 buildings in Nur Shams refugee camp," according to statements made by the UN Relief Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). The demolition comes after the destruction of more than two dozen homes in the occupied West Bank this past week. There is currently no aid entering Gaza and a number of checkpoints have been closed. Israeli authorities are allowing Palestinians access to East Jerusalem and the H2 area of Hebron but only with Israeli-issued permits.

  • Due to aid and funding cuts, "there are an estimated 52.7 million women and children who are at risk of acute hunger between June and August 2025 in Central Sahel and Nigeria," according to a regional food security analysis. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) needs about $620 million to ensure continued life-saving food and nutrition assistance. Chad is entering its sixth consecutive year of severed food insecurity in 2025, with more than a 200% increase since 2020.

African Schools Gear Up for the AI Revolution

"The emergence of cheap or free AI tools is being eagerly embraced by those with smartphones and the ability to get online. As governments and legislators struggle to get their heads around the implications of this powerful technology and work out how to bring in regulations for its safe use, millions of people are enjoying its ability to save time, helping them to transforming raw data into essays, exam answers, or, with a bit more work, even videos and podcasts.

Even in developing countries where electricity and internet access is limited (it’s estimated that over 570 million people in Africa lack electricity), there is enthusiasm for the potential of AI. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), for example, a nation riven by internal conflict, poverty and vast inequality, educators are seeing the impact of AI."
