International Organizations and UN News #9/2025 - March 25, 2025

Dear IO/UNS Community,

We hope everyone had a restful Spring Break and a chance to recover from midterms—whether you stayed in NYC catching up on the city’s cultural and social happenings, or found yourself fulfilling capstone duties on a sunny beach somewhere!

As we enter the second half of the semester, please remember to take care of yourselves during these challenging and unprecedented times. Freedom of speech and academic freedom are essential to education, personal growth, and a thriving democracy. Without them, education risks straying from truth and integrity.

There are many resources available through Campus Student Life, and you’re always welcome to reach out to the Program Assistants if you need support.

This Friday, 28 March, we will be gathering for our all-day event, the IO/UNS Spring Retreat! For those of you who are already approved and on the list, be sure to look out for our emails regarding more information on the retreat. If you are no longer able to attend, please be sure to email the IO/UNS team at  iouns@columbia.edu.

  • On March 21, the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women came to an end. Marking 30 years since the adoption of the  Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA), the CSW adopted a political declaration and UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous stressed that the "Political Declaration is both commitment and challenge. Let no one underestimate what was achieved here at this CSW and the impact it will have on the lives of women and girls." You can read the official US position here, including the repeated renounciation of the SDG agenda.
  • On March 13, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the new UN80 Initiative. As the UN is turning 80 this year, Guterres created a dedicated internal Task Force led by Under-Secretary-General Guy Ryder to develop proposals in three key areas: identifying efficiencies and improvements, reviewing the implementation of mandates from Member States, and a strategic review of deeper, more structural changes and programme realignment.

  • It has been three weeks since the Israeli Authorities blocked humanitarian aid to Gaza, pushing the people of Gaza to an acute hunger crisis. On Sunday, “the siege which is preventing food, medicines, water and fuel from entering the occupied Palestinian territory, has lasted longer than blockades imposed during the first phase of the war,” according to Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA. The situation is also emphasized by Sam Rose, UNRWA Acting Director of Affairs in the enclave, that “if the ceasefire is not restored, it will lead to large-scale loss of life, damage to infrastructure and property, increased risk of infectious disease, and massive trauma for the one million children and for the two million civilians who live in Gaza.”
  • Children, refugees and displaced people worldwide are paying the price for the deep-seated funding crisis that has engulfed the international aid sector, made worse by pronounced cuts in Washington, according to UNICEF and UNHCR. The liquidity crunch has jeopardized lifesaving work, including progress in reducing child mortality, which has fallen by 60 per cent since 1990. “By slashing severe acute malnutrition by one-third since 2000, UNICEF’s efforts have kept 55 million children alive, through simple interventions,” according to the UNICEF spokesperson.

  • Given the impact of deep US funding cuts to humanitarian work worldwide, the head of the UN agency coordinating the fight against HIV-AIDS warned that an additional 6.3 million people will die in the next four years, unless support is reinstated. “It will come back and we see people dying the way we saw them in the 90s and in 2000s,” stated Winnie Byanyima, UNAIDS Executive Director, pointing to a “tenfold increase” from the 600,000 AIDS-related deaths recorded globally in 2023. They also expect an additional 8.7 million new infections. In 2023, there were 1.3 million new infections that emerged globally. Other governments have not yet pledged to fill in the funding gap.

  • On Saturday, 22 March, the UN celebrated World Water Day and honored the first World Glacier Day on 21 March. Some of the key topics that emerged were on “melting glaciers, climate crises, and access to clean water.” The UN World Water Development Report for 2025: Mountains and Glaciers - Water Towers further addresses the significance of protecting these resources and offers solutions to help mitigate and adapt to rapid changes in these frozen water resources. The UN General Assembly had also declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, given that they hold “70% of the world’s freshwater, but since 2023, are continuing to experience their greatest water loss in over 50 years.”

  • On Friday, 21 March, marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, emphasizing the need for the global community to uphold its shared responsibility to combat racism in all its forms. The UN commemorates this day, as it marks the adoption of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and honors the legacy of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, when South African police opened fire on a peaceful protest against apartheid, killing 69 people. “The poison of racism continues to infect our world – a toxic legacy of historic enslavement, colonialism and discrimination,” stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Bigger barriers: Emily Blanchard on tariffs and trade wars

"Not long ago, we were deep in a cost-of-living crisis. Inflation has now eased a bit but geopolitics remain tense and the global economy is still struggling to recover.

But rather than moving towards more open trade, many countries are becoming more protectionist. Adding to the unease, countries are threatening to slap huge tariffs on major trading partners.

In the current climate, there are fears that escalating tariffs could lead to trade wars - a scenario with grim prospects for many developing countries. For more on the ins and outs of tariffs, tune in to the UNCTAD’s Weekly Tradecast with Emily Blanchard, former Chief Economist at the U.S. State Department and  Associate Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College."

This week we are excited to introduce Pallavi Balakrishnan (MIA, USP-LID, 2025)!

When she came to SIPA, she was interested in development finance and how to expand capital, especially private sector capital, towards development outcomes. While she wasn't initially looking at the UN system as the space to get involved with this, she has been interning at the UN DESA's Financing for Sustainable Development Office since last October, on the team that manages private sector partnerships and the GISD Alliance. She has really enjoyed her time here as they have worked towards the Conference on Financing for Development and has been so inspired by the UN's incredible ability to convene cross sectoral engagement at the highest level.

Being able to join these conversations and work on these issues, she has also strengthened her own interest and experiences in partnership building work and innovative finance and hopes to find a more permanent role that lets her engage on these subjects.

In the recent months with an increase in attacks on multilateralism and the development goals that we’ve worked so hard to put together, she thinks there is a need for the system to come together and stress the value of their work and the diversity of services they provide, while also being honest about necessary reforms.

If you'd like to learn more about her internship, please reach out via email or dm her on LinkedIn. Her UNI is pb2929, and her LinkedIn profile can be found here.
