Last year the United Nations commemorated its 75th anniversary, and this year marks 60 years since the plane crash that took the life of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, the crew and UN staff accompanying him when on a mission for peace in the Congo. Hammarskjöld is remembered as a skilled mediator and diplomat whose advocacy for decolonization and dedication to international cooperation saw the UN through a period of intense change in an era characterized by great power competition. The historical contributions of his leadership as UN Secretary-General have had lasting impacts and many aspects of that legacy, particularly his defense of the values enshrined in the UN Charter, his dedication to strengthening the international civil service, and his commitment to adaptability and reform, remain relevant today. It is appropriate today to reflect on where multilateralism stand, on the relevance of the UN and on the legacy of a leadership dedicated to serve its Charter. The UN has evolved with a changing world and it is up to member states to keep strengthening the Organization’s capabilities and recommit to the purposes and principles of the Charter - the visions and values articulated by the UN’s second Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld, are still relevant for this purpose.

While the speaker will join us virtually, students and faculty can decide to attend our in-person gathering or log in virtually (please see the two separate RSVP options).

The keynote speaker of the event is Henrik Hammargren, Executive Director of the Dag Hammarskjold Foundation since 2015.
