The United Nations remains the key institution to foster dignity, prosperity, and peace on a healthy planet. The UN’s work on development is carried out by a broad range of agencies, funds and programmes and contingent on local contexts and regional and global economic and political dynamics. In 2019, the UN started implementing a reform to reposition the United Nations development system. The reform aims at a system that is more integrated, more focused on delivery on the ground, with clearer internal and external accountability for contributions to national needs, and with capacities, skillsets, and resources better aligned to the 2030 Agenda.

A year into the reform, high-level experts share the experiences with the independent and empowered Resident Coordinator system at the country level, the redesigned UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and the collaboration at the global and regional levels at the UN Sustainable Development Group. The discussion will unveil how the UN’s development system can work to support countries to achieve the 2030 Agenda but also highlights challenges to achieve this goal.

The panel features:
Mourad Wahba, Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Arab States, UNDP

Giovanie Biha, Deputy Director, United Nations Development Coordination Office

Irena Vojá─ìková-Sollorano, Regional Director, UN DCO for Europe and Central Asia and UN Resident Coordinator in Turkey

Jeffrey Sachs, University Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, Columbia University

Moderated by Daniel Naujoks, Director a.i. for International Organization & UN Studies, Columbia University
