We often yearn for great leaders while simultaneously resisting them when they emerge. But true statesmanship is not simply about acquiring or exercising power. It is about understanding how power can be used responsibly—and how leaders can persuade, educate, and inspire citizens toward a shared understanding of the public good.
Drawing on Steven B. Smith’s On Statesmanship, this conversation will explore the statesman as an educator: a leader who, through language, argument, judgment, courage, and foresight, helps shape a people’s civic understanding. The discussion will consider what distinguishes statesmanship from demagoguery or technocracy, and why civic education and public spirit remain essential to effective leadership.
