HRHP is excited to host Denise Brown to speak about her current role as UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, and the different stakeholders and politics involved in securing access to aid for civilians in need throughout the country. Denise Brown will also speak about her experience as a woman in leadership roles at the World Food Program in countries around the world. The discussion will be hybrid in person and on Zoom (scroll to the bottom of this description to access the virtual meeting information). Refreshments will be provided.

Ms. Denise Brown is the head of the United Nations in Ukraine. Since August 2022 she has been serving as UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, overseeing the coordination of the humanitarian response in Ukraine and the UN’s support for recovery. Ms. Brown has more than 26 years of experience working in international settings.

Prior to taking up her current post, Ms. Brown served as Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), and as United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in CAR from 2019-2022.

Ms. Brown served for three years in the World Food Programme Headquarters, first as the Director of Emergencies – leading the global response to the ‘four famines’ of 2016 and 2017, and subsequently as the Director of Policy and Programme. She moved to WFP HQ after having served as Regional Director in West Africa since 2013. In West Africa, she was responsible for WFP operations across 20 countries, as well the Organization’s response to several complex emergencies and was the corporate lead for the response to the Ebola virus pandemic.

Ms. Brown joined WFP in 1998 in Iraq. She has worked in challenging environments including Afghanistan (1999 – 2002), Kenya (2002 – 2007) and Somalia (2007 – 2009) where she was Deputy Country Director. From 2009 to 2011, she was based in New York as Senior Liaison Officer in the WFP office. From 2011 to 2013, she served as WFP Country Director for Niger in the Sahel where she successfully coordinated an early response to the food security and nutrition crisis of 2012. Before joining WFP, she worked for nongovernmental organizations in Cambodia and Haiti.

Ms. Brown holds a Masters’ of Science from Purdue University in the United States and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia in Canada.
