Book Talk with Suraj Yengde

Caste is not just an Indian story. It shows up in Silicon Valley offices, in Gulf labor camps, in British courtrooms and in diaspora communities across the world.
The South Asia Association at SIPA is excited to host Dr. Suraj Milind Yengde for a lunch talk on his new book, Caste: A Global Story. Yengde follows caste beyond South Asia, from indentured laborers in the 19th-century Caribbean to migrant workers in the Middle East today. He looks at how colonialism, religion and nationalism shaped caste hierarchies, why much of the South Asian diaspora has stayed quiet on anti-caste struggles, and what Dalit and Black movements can learn from each other.
Yengde is Assistant Professor of History and Africana Studies and a Ford Foundation Presidential Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, and the author of the bestselling Caste Matters.
Join us for a conversation on inequality, migration and justice, and bring your questions.
