As we wrap up the third week of school, SIPASA would like to make sure you’re aware of two important resources on campus that are available to all students at Columbia.
Columbia University Food Bank
SIPA students facing food insecurity are eligible to receive help from the Columbia University Food Bank, located in 582 Lerner Hall. Students with any level of food insecurity can receive a two week disbursement of non-perishable food items. For more information, visit their website here.
Columbia Psychological Services
SIPASA understands how overwhelming the start of the school year can be and want to make sure you know that SIPA students are still eligible to use their services, including daily walk in hours. There are weekly problem solving hours, which allow students to talk through an issue with a counselor on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00pm in IAB 610, emergency drop in hours Mondays through Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm in Lerner Hall, and SIPA students can schedule appointments by calling the office. Description: Trey is the Director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative under the Scowcroft Center at the Atlantic Council. His team works on the role of the technology industry in geopolitics, the security of the internet, cyber conflict, and growing a more capable cybersecurity policy workforce. Previously, he was a Senior Security Strategist with Microsoft working on cloud computing, supply chain security, data governance, and vulnerability disclosure as well as a fellow with the Belfer Cybersecurity Project at Harvard Kennedy School and a non-resident fellow with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He holds a PhD in Political Science and BS in Musical Theatre and Political Science. Lunch will be served.

Description: Florian Reber is an international consultant and adviser with 12 years of experience in climate policy, sustainability and public-private partnerships. Inspired by the desire to combine his work experience with his passion for the outdoors, he initiated the Tales of Change project in 2018, a bike-touring and climate storytelling project to document present-day impacts of climate change along the Continental Divide, the Alps and the Himalayas. In this interactive session, Florian Reber will share stories from the field on how climate change is impacting the Western US, and engage students in a discussion on nature-based climate solutions. He will also share advice on effective leadership and facilitation of public-private partnerships.

Event: Geopolitics of Energy: Implications of Conflicts arising in South Asia and Middle East for Pakistan's Energy Policy?

Description: Pakistan is currently facing a national energy security risk, as tensions escalate in South Asia and the Middle East. On one end, it has experienced a bottleneck with the neighboring India over the issue of sovereignty of Kashmir, and on the other hand conflicts in the Middle East pose a risk to its natural gas supply — which has the potential of causing the nation-wide blackouts and a halt in economic activity. We have invited our reverent speaker Mr. Nadeem Babar, who is currently acting as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on petroleum division, to give us a critical review of the geopolitics of energy in the region and how it impacts Pakistan and its current and future energy policy. Description: Presented by Lauren Ziegler (SIPA 2010) and Alejandro Paniagua from the Brookings Institute, they will discuss their latest report title "Learning to Leapfrog: Innovative Pedagogies to Transform Education", which focuses on the need for transformational teaching and learning practices to develop the full breadth of skills all children need to thrive, including those in the most marginalized communities. The report argues that three structural changes are necessary for innovative pedagogies to flourish: investing in foundations for quality teaching, widening the profile of educators, and supporting hybrid learning environments. The report also discusses scaling transformational teaching and learning by harnessing the power of networks. The presenters will also share about their experiences working at Brookings and the OECD.

Description: To celebrate the International Day of Peace, we are delighted to host Mr. Ion Lazarenco, Nobel Peace Prize candidate, who is the 8th person in history and the first Moldovan, that completed the Oceans Seven - swimming across 7 open water channels. Mr. Lazarenco completed this momentous feat in the name of world peace. Mr. Lazarenco will give a talk on his experience and motivation to complete the Oceans Seven challenge, as well as his view on how athletic activism can provide an unconventional channel to advance world peace across the globe. As a new "scramble for Africa" is taking place, ODA is becoming a vehicle for profitable investments by state entities, cover-up for humanitarian action, often in a context of growing military involvement.
