SIPA Budget Fall 2019 Updates and Changes
Dear Student Leaders,
Welcome back to SIPA! I hope everyone had a great summer changing the world. I know many of you have been asking questions about budgeting for this semester, so here's an update on all things budget related for fall 2019.
The most important change to the budgeting process this year is that it will be done ENTIRELY ONLINE! That means there will be no in-person presentations and no meetings over the weekend. All of the budgeting will be done online through Campus Groups.
Since many of us are still getting used to this new online platform, I've created directions on how each student organization can submit their budget request for this semester. Please see below.
Directions to Budgeting Module in Campus Groups
- Log in on CampusGroups.
- Manage your group.
- Click on "Budgeting" under "Money" on your left-side menu.

- Once there, click on the "Create Budget" on the top right side.

- Fill out the request form. Please put "Budget Request Type" as "Other" and the "Title" as "[Your student organization's name] Budget Fall 2019". In the "Description" please decribe the goals of your budget this year and what you hope to do with your allotted funds. You can leave the "More Details for Events" section blank.
- Click "Next" and enter your budget items. You MUST LIST each budgeting item you have for Fall 2019. This includes events, fees, and other purchases. Please remember to include as much detail as you can for each item and how it is integral to your organization's goals and needs in the "Notes" box. Also be sure to include the different student organizations you will be collobrating with. The module will automatically add up all your items and that will be the total budget you will be requesting from SIPASA.
- Click "Finish" and then submit your budget request.

Once you have submitted your budget request, please expect a follow up with comments under the "Notes" column on your budget within the next two business days. The comments will be displayed on your specific budget items within the module as seen below.
All budgets are due Friday, September 20th at 11pm. Please submit all budget requests by then in the Campus Groups budget module. Final allocations should be released by the end of the September.
SIPASA is also planning on rolling out a new environmental sustainable event planning policy. If student organizations can prove that their event is minimizing the use of plastic and using reusable utensils, cups, and plates, SIPASA will reimburse $25 to $50 per event. Please stay tuned for more details on this in upcoming emails.
As for other budgetary needs, if you need a refresher on how budgeting works at SIPA, please remember to attend the SIPA Business Office Budget Refresher on Monday, September 16 at 1pm.
Please feel free to contact me (Jin Woo Chung at jc5070@columbia.edu) for any questions related to the budgeting process. If you have specific questions about reimbursements, vouchers or the exact amount of money your student organization owes, please contact Yajaira Nieves, the new assistant director at the SIPA Business Office. Her email is yn2297@sipa.columbia.edu.
Best,
The SIPASA Budget Committee
