Details
The Astoria Generating Station is a 935-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant that provides critical intermediate dispatch capacity to New York City’s electricity grid. Located in Astoria, Queens, the facility is bordered by the East River and Luyster Creek and sits within a larger 300-acre utility complex used for energy infrastructure and operations. The station includes four generating units with two units capable of switching to diesel during natural gas supply constraints, offering operational flexibility.
The visit will be organized as following:
9.15am: meeting at SIPA and distribution of light lunch for everyone
9.30am: departure for the generating station (located ~70min from SIPA with public transportation)
11.00am: check-in and ID check
11.10am: brief in a conference room, covering the history of Eastern Generation, how the station works, and potential professional opportunities at the company + visit around the station with a tour guide!
1.00pm: end of the visit, transportation back to SIPA
2.30pm: estimated arrival at SIPA
Note that this visit will require a proper attire: wear flat, non-slip, closed-toe shoes (no high heels, crocs, or open-toed shoes), and make sure you have long sleeve shirt and pants made of all natural fibers.
