STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS

Gergana Tsvetanova is a second-year MIA student concentrating in EPD and specializing in Gender and Public Policy and DAQA. She is originally from Sofia, Bulgaria. Gergana is very passionate about gender and data. Prior to SIPA, she worked for the World Bank’s Women, Business and the Law team where she researched legal barriers to women’s economic empowerment. Her research focused primarily on restrictions to women’s work, workplace protections for women and leave policies. Over the summer, Gergana had the opportunity to do a remote internship with the World Bank’s Development Impact Evaluation team where she supported two impact evaluations of edutainment interventions – one in India and one in Mexico. Gergana holds a bachelor’s degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Bath. As you can probably tell from her Instagram stories, she is a foodie and her favorite cuisine is Italian. Gergana also loves sports and is looking forward to skiing in the winter.

Sanarya Al-Shalal is a first-year MPA student with an EPD concentration. Sanarya is proud to embody Iraq’s diverse ethnic charm with both Kurdish and Iraqi heritages. She is fluent in both Arabic and Kurdish. After the 2003 war, her family moved to Canada where she attended high school and completed her undergraduate education in Economics from Queen’s University. After graduation, Sanarya was adamant to use her education and privilege in building back her homeland. For the last three years, Sanarya has lived between Erbil, Iraq and Beirut, Lebanon working at a boutique consulting firm tasked with assisting the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in transforming its most vital institutions, from Customs to the Ministry of Finance and Economy, into more robust and effective organizations. Sanarya worked on KRG’s fiscal management, building the first comprehensive customs statistics in the KRG, budget preparations and negotiations with the central government, and policy analysis for various ministers. Post-SIPA, she hopes to be a change agent serving both MENA region’s economic and social challenges as well as her adopted homeland, but she thinks they’ll be okay. Sanarya had a great time breaking gender barriers in Erbil; quite literally pulling chairs and fitting herself into the same table as the men, for example.

Outside of SIPA and work, Sanarya loves horse riding, hearing people’s life stories and heritages, and twitter. Please feel free to reach out to her through email or social media!

PICK OF THE WEEK

This week's featured movie: No Man's Land (2001)

Winner of the Special Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at Cannes Film Festival 2001, No Man's Land is a 2001 Bosnian war film that is set in the midst of the Bosnian War. After various skirmishes, two wounded soldiers, one Bosniak and one Serb, confront each other in a trench in the no man's land between their lines. They wait for dark, trading insults and even finding some common ground; sometimes one has the gun, sometimes the other, sometimes both. Things get complicated when another wounded Bosnian comes to, but can't move because a bouncing mine is beneath him. Superbly written and directed, "No Man's Land" deals with a complicated subject with stinging humor and great moments of drama.

This week's featured book: Farewell Kabul

From the award-winning co-author of ‘I Am Malala’, this book asks just how the might of NATO, with 48 countries and 140,000 troops on the ground, failed to defeat a group of religious students and farmers? How did it go so wrong?

‘Farewell Kabul’ tells how the West turned success into defeat in the longest war fought by the United States in its history and by Britain since the Hundred Years War. It is the story of well-intentioned men and women going into a place they did not understand at all. And how, what had once been the right thing to do had become a conflict that everyone wanted to exit. It has been a fiasco which has left Afghanistan still one of the poorest and most dangerous nations on earth.

The leading journalist on the region with unparalleled access to all key decision makers, Christina Lamb is the best-selling author of ‘The Africa House’ and ‘I Am Malala’, co-authored with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. This revelatory and personal account is her final analysis of the realities of Afghanistan, told unlike anyone before
