Join us as we celebrate the end of another academic year. Raise your glass to the graduating class of 2021 in an evening of celebration, tribute, and wonderful performances from your fellow EPD-ers. As in the previous years, we will have both students and faculty to grace the evening with speeches and performances of various kind - poetry, musical instrument, singing, and so on. As we build our program for the evening, we would also like to hear your suggestions for what you would like to see. Human Rights Lab: Can Education Prevent Conflict ad Sustain Peace?

An EDP Workshop Team has been invited by their client, OHCHR to present ther initial findings of their project "Understanding the Strategic Role of Human Rights Education and Training (HRET) in Preventing Conflict and Sustaining Peace", at the at the 10th ECOSOC Youth Forum. Join them to learn about their research findings so far. 



Gender and Migration in Southeast Asia

We want to break the usual narrative about migration and focus on how gender identities impact the migration experience. The MWG invites you to a conversation on how varying gender identities have played a role in defining the migrant experience in Southeast Asia. So many of us at SIPA are international students or children of migrants. This would be a chance for all of us to learn, listen and engage with gender and migration experts and rethink our own experiences and that of our families. Come join us for a conversation to shape the narrative around gendered migration focussing on one of the most culturally diverse regions of the world.

Our speakers will discuss their work experience, the investment and emerging technology landscape in developing countries with specific emphasis on Latin America and Africa, and the unique energy trends and challenges facing these markets. 




Information Session: The International Fellows Program

Applications for the International Fellows Program (IFP) for the 2021-2022 academic year will open on Friday, April 9. On that day, Program Director Professor Stephen Sestanovich will host an information session, welcoming interested students to learn more about the program and how to apply. The IFP is a two-semester seminar open to students of all graduate degree programs at Columbia University and dedicated to examining the role of the United States in the world over time; the leaders, concepts, and events that have re-shaped it; and emerging debates about its future direction. Fellows receive a stipend and access to distinguished scholars and practitioners as a part of dedicated study trips and meetings.

World Bank Group & International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings

At the heart of the Spring Meetings are meetings of the joint World Bank Group/IMF Development Committee and the IMF International Monetary and Financial Committee, which discuss progress on the work of the institutions. Other featured events include regional briefings, press conferences, and fora focused on international development, issues of debt, economic recovery, vaccines, and climate. The public program of events are streamed on World Bank Live and may be viewed without registering. Spring Meetings participants typically include approximately 2,800 delegates from our member countries, 350 observer organization representatives, 800 members of the press, and 550 accredited civil society members.

ROPES (Regional Organization for Peace, Economics & Security) Briefing

More than three years before the Abraham Accords, ROPES was created with what at the time seemed like a fanciful mission: to expand the coalition for a conflict-ending Israeli-Palestinian peace deal by connecting forward-thinking Israeli and Palestinian emerging leaders with likeminded peers from across the Arab world. They will be discussing Summer Internship opportunities which will be done remotely, unless the student would like to cover their own expenses to live in Tel Aviv, Israel for the duration of the internship. Open to all students, regional language skills helpful.

This week's featured film: The Mauritanian


The Mauritanian is a 2021 legal drama film directed by Kevin Macdonald from a screenplay written by M.B. Traven, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. The film is based on the 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a true story of Salahi's experience of being held for fourteen years without charge in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The film stars Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
