Subject: Human Rights Working Group -- Aaand We Back!

Hey HRWG-ers <3

Belated Welcome (back) to our HRWG fam and to all those fighting the good fight.
We hope you had some time to recharge this summer, although now that might feel far, far away as the semester is in full swing.
Fall *sweater weather* has arrived! Hydrate and get your flu shots dears.

We look forward to getting to know you all and hear more about the issues you care about as the semester progresses.
Thanks to those who stopped by to chat at our SIPAFest table.

As always, yours in love, rights, & solidarity
 HRWG Board

**Call to Action**

No New Jails- a coalition of NYC community organizations- has rallied against City Council plans to close Rikers prison and replace it with 4 new jails with an $11 billion dollar budget.
This money could be diverted to countless community initiatives that could actually keep communities safe, rather than continuing to criminalize black and brown folks and profit off of the modern-day slave system of mass incarcaration.

Find Out More Info on their website No New Jails here  or follow them on instagram: @nonewjails_nyc.  Their representive's 2-min testimonies to City Council (on insta) are incredible.

Please consider signing this petition to support the organizing efforts of No New Jails.
They are also hosting demonstrations, community teach-ins and other events:

Oct 11th  "No Pride in Jails Community Speakout- Trans, Queer and Sex Worker Communities Against the Corey Johnson Supported Jail Plan"
Day of Resistance on Oct. 13th - with activities in each borough
