What Does Credibility Mean Today - Experiences from the International Fund for Agricultural Development

Dr. Jyotsna "Jo" Puri is an adjunct associate professor at SIPA, where she teaches impact evaluation in practice. She is also the Vice President, Strategy and Knowledge Department (SKD) at IFAD. She leads the organizations strategy work in IFAD’s key areas targeting agriculture, climate, gender, nutrition, youth and social inclusion. Puri provides the vision for evidence-informed advice on program designs and implementation, contributing to resource mobilization, and supporting IFAD’s global remit in providing state-of the art policy advice related to these topics. Dr. Puri has worked previously at the Green Climate Fund, 3ie, UNEP, the World Bank and UNDP.

In Conversation with Obama Foundation Scholars: Migration and Human Rights

Join us for a discussion with Obama Foundation Scholars, Wael Haffar Habbal and Teresa Buczkowska about their work with refugees and migrants within the human rights space.

Wael Haffar Habbal is a Syrian asylee who is fostering
active political engagement among Greece's migrant
communities and reshaping the narratives that portray
refugees as victims rather than leaders.

Teresa Buczkowska is a Scholar from Poland and Ireland focused on building migrant leadership as a long-term strategy for addressing inequality and to strengthen migrants' ability to play a meaningful role in programs and policy decisions that impact their lives.

Book Talk: The Blue Commons: Rescuing the Economy of the Sea

Guy Standing is an economist and Professorial Research Associate at SOAS University of London. Professor Standing is a founder and honorary co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), an international NGO promoting basic income as a right. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. He has designed and conducted basic income pilots in India and elsewhere, and is currently advising the governments of Wales and Catalonia on ongoing basic income pilots.

His most recent book is The Blue Commons: Rescuing the Economy of the Sea (2022), which the Financial Times made one of its Books of the Year, peels back the veil of the boundless exploitation and inherent criminality in the ocean economy. Written by an economist responsible for much of our contemporary understanding of inequality and possible solutions, this book not only reveals the scale of the challenge but points to a transformative alternative: building a blue commons, dismantling rentier capitalism and prioritizing the world’s commoners and the health of our oceans.

As the Chief Financial Officer & Executive Vice President of Finance at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), Annika leads the financial planning and analysis, accounting, payroll, risk management, and investment activities of the Authority. Annika will discuss her time at SIPA and how her degree has helped prepare her for a career in NYC government. Light refreshments to follow.

Palestine Refugees and the Role of UNRWA

Almost 6 million Palestine refugees live in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Since 1950, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is the dedicated UN agency to provide protection and assistance to this population. Greta Gunnarsdottir, Director of the UNRWA's Representative office in NY and Silvia Delgado, UNRWA Senior Liaison Officer provide an overview of how UNRWA engages in education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance, including in times of armed conflict.

Please join for a reflection on the world's first "feminist foreign policy," championed by Sweden's Margot Wallström in 2014. 

Ms. Margot Wallström was elected to the Swedish parliament in 1979 before serving as Minister for Youth, Women and Consumer Affairs from 1988 to 1991, Minister of Culture from 1994 to 1996, and Minister of Social Affairs from 1996 to 1998. In 1999, she worked with Worldview Global Media in Colombo, Sri Lanka. From 1999 to 2004, Ms Wallström was the European Commissioner for the Environment and then first Vice President of the European Commission from 2004 to 2010. In 2010, the United Nations appointed her the first Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict. From 2012-2014 she was Chair of the Board of Lund University, Sweden. She then served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden from 2014-2019.

The NYPD Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau is the premier local law enforcement unit working to deter or interdict terrorism or major crime operations in New York City. This bureau is looking for talented civilian analysts to support the counterterrorism operational mission of the NYPD. Additionally, the Bureau is also searching for skilled personnel members to assist in its burgeoning Gun Violence Strategies Partnership (GVSP) initiative designed to counter the proliferation of violent gun crimes in New York City.
