UN Career Series with Gülden Türköz-Cosslett (UNDP)

Join the IO/UNS Specialization at our next career series event led by SIPA alumna Gülden Türköz-Cosslett (MIA, Class of 1985). Before her current role as Deputy Director of UNDP’s Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA), she served as UN Women’s Director of Programmes, Senior Advisor to the UN Deputy Secretary-General, UN Resident Coordinator in Albania, and other UN agencies. Ms. Türköz-Cosslett will be sharing valuable tips from her experience.
Ms. Gülden Türköz-Cosslett, a national of Turkey, is the Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director, Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy, UNDP since February 2015.
Prior to this, Gülden was the Director of Programmes with UN Women. She has also served in the Office of the UN Deputy Secretary-General as Senior Advisor on System-Wide Coherence, where she led the Transition Team supporting the establishment of UN Women. Prior to that, Gülden served as the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Albania where she led the delivering as One UN initiative. Before that she was Team Leader for the Central Asia Cluster in UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Earlier in her career, Gülden worked with the Executive Office of the Administrator as Programme Specialist, Portfolio Manager in UNOPS Regional Office in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, and UNCDF.

Peacebuilding Fieldwork Symposium

Join Columbia University graduate students as they discuss their fieldwork experiences and the emerging issues facing today's practitioners in the diverse and ever-changing field of peacebuilding. This is the final event for the "Applied Peacebuilding: Core Competencies for Fieldwork" class of 2019. Hear first-hand accounts of work in Mali, Thailand, Palestine & Israel, Timor Leste, Turkey, Tunisia, Lebanon, Myanmar, and Kenya. Students, faculty, practitioners, and others interested in the field of peacebuilding are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Overview

The European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) is committed to furthering progress towards ‘market-oriented economies and the promotion of private and entrepreneurial initiative’. Stephen Halstead, Talent Acquisition, will provide an overview of the EBRD to include its mandate and projects, areas of investment, opportunities and recruitment process.  Afterwards, a few short video clips will be shared to further expand on the different facets of the Bank. Sweta Penemetsa will also present on her role as an Associate Director Banker in the Financial Institutions Division.

UN Secretariat Career

UN Secretariat representatives, Floresha Berisha and Alexia Lachavane, will be discussing career opportunities with the United Nations Secretariat, including information about the internship programme and the Young Professionals Programme. Recruiting policies, processes and platforms will also be provided. The presenters will also facilitate the staffing of global field missions by attracting and retaining top talent, provide human resources guidance and oversight and advocate for the inclusion of the field perspective across all United Nations fora. In this regard, the Floresha and Alexia will discuss UN field careers in peacekeeping and special political missions, including where they work and how to apply. They will also touch upon internship opportunities in New York and other entry points into the UN.
Floresha Berisha is presently serving as Human Resources Officer in the Staffing Diversity and Outreach Section in the Office of Human Resources in the United Nations Secretariat. Her responsibilities include providing policy advice on staffing matters, and conducting outreach to attract the most qualified talents, taking into account a broad geographic representation, gender, diversity and inclusion. Alexia Lachavanne is presently serving as Junior Professional Officer in the Staffing Diversity and Outreach Section in the Office of Human Resources in the United Nations Secretariat.

The Lion’s Share is an innovative wildlife conservation and animal welfare fund initiated by the private sector and UNDP. The initiative is to be capitalized by funds collected from advertisers when images or footage of animals are used in advertisements. Conflict Resolution Research Intern, Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding
Tanenbaum’s Conflict Resolution program identifies, studies, and supports the work of religiously motivated peace actors in conflict zones around the world. Our initiatives with and on behalf of these women and men promote religious peacemaking as a legitimate and sometimes necessary component of conflict resolution/transformation, peacebuilding and Track II (citizen) diplomacy.This position is an opportunity for a motivated student or recent graduate to help build the growing field of religious peacemaking. Economics of Conflict and Latin America Intern, International Crisis Group
Crisis Group is looking for a part-time intern to assist the Economics of Conflict and Latin America programs. The intern is expected to provide research assistance, mainly from Crisis Group’s New York office, on several ongoing projects related to political and criminal violence in Latin America.     UNDP and OPHI are excited to offer you a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).   • IO/UNS Social Media Ambassadors Wanted!

Based on your feedback collected during the IO/UNS Specialization Town Hall, we are glad to announce that the applications for IO/UNS Social Media Ambassador pool are now open and all SIPA students are welcome to apply

IO/UNS Specialization offers an opportunity for students to engage with the program closely and become one of the critical voices at SIPA. We are looking for a group of students who are willing to volunteer as IO/UNS Social Media Ambassadors for a period of 2-4 months, working as a team of activists raising awareness about the issues related to international organizations, global governance, and the UN at Columbia and beyond!

As our Social Media Ambassador, you will develop innovative and current content for IO/UNS Specialization social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook and support growing our network and outreach impact. This can rely on:

  • Events and talks taking place at Columbia, UN, and other international organizations and news about the IO/UNS Specialization

  • Other creative media and advocacy content
