Dear IO/UNS Specializers,

Welcome to the IO/UNS Specialization! In this newsletter, you will be able to find the information about IO/UNS team, upcoming Specialization events and how to stay connected, UN General Assembly events, talks and events at Columbia, as well as internship and job opportunities, and more!

We would like to take a moment to recognize the incredible hard work and spirit that Professor Elisabeth Lindenmayer brought to her role as the former IO/UNS Director, helping to transform the Specialization into the pioneering institute that it is today. The IO/UNS Specialization welcomes a number of changes this semester, including the appointment of a new Interim Director - Daniel Naujoks, and two new Program Assistants - Nigina Khaitova and Sasha Lagombra.

Daniel Naujoks

Professor Daniel Naujoks has graciously stepped in as the Interim Director of the IO/UNS Specialization, and has hit the ground running in his new role. Professor Naujoks has been with SIPA since 2015, and focuses primarily on issues related to international migration and development and homeland-diaspora relations. Outside of academia, he works with various UN entities such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), EC-UN Joint Migration and Development Initiative (JMDI), the UN Population Division, UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO) on development and migration affairs.

Nigina Khaitova

Born and raised in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Nigina has been living in New York for the last six years, having graduated from Pace University NYC with the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Peace and Justice Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Philosophy. She has experience working directly with UN entities in Uzbekistan, and with UN-affiliated NGOs promoting the rights of the girl child at the UN Headquarters in NY. While at SIPA, Nigina concentrates in Human Rights, pursues Harriman Institute Certificate Programme, and serves as the President of SIPA Eurasia Group.

Sasha Lagombra

Originally from Queens, New York, Sasha received her Bachelor of Science in Economics with a Specialization in Multinational Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She worked in human resources and compliance for various local NGOs before leaving to join the United States Peace Corps, where she worked as a Community Economic Development volunteer in the Dominican Republic. At SIPA, she is pursuing an Urban and Social Policy concentration and serves on the Diversity Committee. In addition to serving as your PA, she is also a Finance Intern for NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest public health system.

IO/UNS ANNOUNCEMENTS

We are looking forward to working with you all in planning an exciting and eventful semester! We currently have partnerships in play with the Office of Career Services to better support IO/UNS students in their professional career, and are looking to host a number of events including high-level panels with UN officials and working lunches with UN ambassadors.

  • Come meet fellow IO/UNS Specializers and our team at the IO/UNS Town Hall on October 4 (Friday), 12:45-2 pm, IAB 407 (lunch will be provided).
  • Stay up-to-date with all IO/UNS news by following us on CampusGroupsWhatsAppFacebook...and Twitter!
The IO/UNS Specialization just launched a Twitter account that will post new UN developments, internship opportunities, reports, publications, and events. We aim at reaching a large number of people and also showcase the important work done on this at SIPA. For this, we need your support to grow our followers. As you know, the larger the number of followers we have, the more will UN agencies and partners recognize us as important partners in their outreach efforts. This means we get more information about internships, events and job opportunities that will ultimately benefit you. Thus, please follow our account, ask you networks to follow us, and interact with our twitter feed by retweeting and commenting.

UN General Assembly

This week and next week (17-30 September), the UN Headquarters in New York hosts the 74th session of the General Assembly. While there is an understandable interest to attend the meetings and deliberations, most of the meetings are not open to the public.

There are two ways you can experience the proceedings nonetheless.

1. UN WebTV has a life webcast of most meetings and you can tune in to the discussions of your interest: http://webtv.un.org

2. There are a few side events and connected events that take place outside the UN. These give you an opportunity to experience the UNGA atmosphere and connect with some of the main ideas and actors. You can find these events at https://ungaguide.com/  and https://tinyurl.com/y3dfwy4y. Please check requirements to RSVP as early as possible to secure a spot.

We have selected a few events below:
