“Third UN”: Impacts, Access & Barriers of NGOs at the United Nations

When: Monday, February 12, 2024 | 1-2 PM
Where: Room 407

A range of non-state actors regularly engage in UN discussions and processes. These include intellectuals, scholars, think tanks, NGOs, private sector companies, and the media. Collectively, they are often referred to as the “Third UN” that interacts with member states, as well as the international bureaucracies of UN entities. NGOs often hold a special role in bringing voices from the ground to the diplomatic parquet in New York and Geneva, asking for state accountability and infusing new ideas into multilateral deliberations. How do NGOs access UN processes, what determines their impact, and what barriers continue to exist that hamper their influence? What distinctions can be made between international and grassroots NGOs and how can UN civil society participation systems promote justice and equity? Join us for an engaging panel discussion with:
Panelists
Wook-Jin Chang, Chief of NGO Branch, Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs
Maithili Pai, Programme Officer, Civil Society Access and Participation, International Service for Human Rights on the access and politics of access of human rights NGOs to UN processes
Moderator: Professor Daniel Naujoks, Director, International Organization & UN Studies, Columbia-School of International and Public Affairs

ESG and Bioethics: Intersections, Opportunities and Challenges

When: Thursday, February 15, 2024 | 6:15 PM - 7:45 PM
Where: Online Event

The scope of Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance, or ESG, has been expanding to encompass a broad range of issues. Although diverse, many of these areas involve, at their core, crucial ethical concerns. Questions emerge concerning the roles and responsibilities of corporations and other stakeholders, as well as the short- and long-term social and environmental risks and benefits. How do these and other ethical tensions emerge in ESG, and how are they addressed? Can improvements be made, and if so, how? As a field, bioethics examines such quandaries, yet it hasn’t been directly involved in ESG efforts—until now. Our online event, ESG in Bioethics will bring together leaders from both fields to explore these important and fascinating issues, in order to discover the intersections, challenges and opportunities they present.
Speakers:
  • Steve Cohen, PhD, Senior Vice Dean, School of Professional Studies; Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University
  • Paul Washington, Executive Director, ESG Center, The Conference Board
  • Tracy Barbra, Executive Director of the Lucas Institute of Venture Ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University
  • Michael Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice, Columbia Law School
Moderated by:
Robert Klitzman, M.D., Program Director, Bioethics; Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University Irving Medical Center
You can register here.

Book Talk: "When Left Moves Right"

When: Thursday, February 15, 2024 | 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Where: IAB Room 1219, Marshall D. Shulman Seminar Room

Please join the Harriman Institute for a book talk by Maria Snegovaya, discussed by Sheri Berman. Moderated by Alexander Cooley.
Over the past two decades, postcommunist countries have witnessed a sudden shift in the electoral fortunes of their political parties: previously successful center-left parties suffered dramatic electoral defeats and disappeared from the political scene, while right-wing populist parties soared in popularity and came to power. This dynamic echoed similar processes in Western Europe and raises a question: Were these dynamics in any way connected?
This book argues that they were. And that the root of the connection between them lies in the pro-market rebranding of the ex-communist left—the key explanatory variable. This book argues that, though the left’s pro-market shift initially led to electoral rewards, it had a less straightforward impact on left-wing parties’ electoral fortunes in the long run. Traditional supporters of the left (working-class and economically vulnerable groups) were alienated by the new economic policies, and the middle-class voters newly drawn to these parties did not compensate for those losses. As a result, for several electoral rounds following the rebranding, reformist parties on the left suffered dramatic electoral defeats. In response, right-wing parties in their respective countries adopted more redistributive economic platforms consistent with preferences of former supporters of the left, and incorporated sizeable shares of these electorates. This contributed to the growth of right-wing populist parties in the countries with a pro-market left.
You can reserve your seat here.
