EPD EVENTS: A THROWBACK

As the semester comes to a close, we wanted to take this time to reflect on some beautiful memories we made this Fall and things to look forward to in the spring...

We started off the semester with a social at Harlem Tavern and welcomed new students

We followed with a full day EPD outdoor retreat at the Taconic Outdoor Education Center
(P.S. Look at how cute all of us look)

We shared our first EPD-friendsgiving meal after COVID which was absolutely scrumptious (YUMMM)

We engaged in an interesting dicsussion on the Human Development Report "Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a Transforming World" with Pedro Conceição, Director of the Human Development Report Office at UNDP and José Antonio Ocampo, SIPA Professor and EPD Co-Director currently serving as a Minister of Finance in his home country of Colombia.

And we are looking forward to spring! Your favorite PAs are planning additional faculty coffee chats, guest speaker sessions, a Karaoke night and many more fun events.
For more ideas on events you would like to attend or co-host please reach out to us via our email ID's at the end of this newsletter.

EPD Concentration Audit for May 2023 Graduates

This message is for students who plan to graduate in May 2023. Please read carefully.

EPD will use Stellic to approve your concentration audit plans and to confirm you have fulfilled all EPD requirements for graduation. To make sure that you are on track to meet your EPD requirements for graduation, we ask that you log in to Stellic at https://columbia.stellic.com, and carefully review your EPD profile before you finalize your spring schedule. If you have yet to fulfill a specific EPD requirement, be sure to plan accordingly.

Each student expecting to graduate in May 2023 must finalize their EPD audit plan in Stellic by Friday, 1/20/2023. EPD will then confirm that your plan has been approved and that you are expected to complete all concentration requirements.

Additional instructions:
o   If you received approval for a course substitution for an EPD requirement but it is not yet reflected in your profile, forward your approval confirmation email to Ilona Vinklerova (iv2105) and she will adjust your Stellic profile.

o   Students who would like to count a course that hasn’t been approved for EPD can submit a request to Ilona Vinklerova (iv2105) for the course to be considered. They should email her the course syllabus and specify which requirement they wish to count it for. In general, a course to be approved for EPD must focus on issues in developing countries and/or emerging markets. Note that the EPD double counting policy would still apply here. We ask that you allow for three business days to receive a reply.

o   If you are an MPA-EPD student, you must also fulfill the MIA language requirement and prove language proficiency in a language other than English. Students can fulfill the language requirement with any modern language offered by Columbia University language programs or the Language Resource Center. This requirement can be met in one of the three ways listed here. Please make sure to speak with your advising dean if this applies to you.

We urge you not to wait until the last minute to review your Stellic profile. Allow yourself enough time to sort out any pending requirements. Winter break is a great time to do this. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

JOBS & OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

SIPA Sustainable Investing Research Initiative - IEN Student Challenge
Application Deadline: Monday, December 12, 2022

SIPA's Sustainable Investing Research Initiative (SIRI) is proud to introduce IEN Sustainable & Impact Investing Learning and Knowledge (SILK) 2023 Corporate Engagement Challenge which will run from January 2023 - April 2023.

The IEN Student Corporate Engagement Challenge is a first-of-its-kind student investment challenge in which students pitch an investment in a publicly-traded company, and include in that recommendation a shareholder engagement strategy focused on addressing inequality and the climate crisis, as these are systemic risks that threaten a healthy society, and in turn, healthy portfolio returns.

Participating students will receive a variety of benefits, including access to mentorship and networking opportunities, free and discounted registration to educational workshops and industry events, presentation opportunities, and multimedia interview opportunities. 2022 participating teams included Yale University, the University of Chicago, NYU, and the University of California Berkeley, amongst others.

We will be selecting one team to represent SIPA at the competition. The team must have no less than 3 and no more than 5 students. Each team must submit a one-page sample proposal for the competition along with brief bios of team members by December 12, 2022. The proposal must highlight thoughts on why shareholder engagement strategy is essential to tackle systemic risks, and why this should be included in a stock pitch. Please submit your team's proposal here.

The selected team will be notified by December 20, 2022

WINTER BREAK CHECKLIST

We wanted to forward some advice sent by the CAC office so all EPD-ers can take
advantage of the break to move forward with their internship and job applications.
Here is a brief checklist of what to do:
  • Decide on summer or post-graduate plans, including whether you will do an international or domestic internship/job search, and start targeting employers. Apply for relevant positions via SIPAlink.
  • Create a strategy and be organized in your search. Identify 10-20 organizations of interest to you and create an Excel spreadsheet tracking the progress of your communication with these organizations.
  • Create job search agents on SIPAlink and other job boards. Setting up these job search agents over the break will save you time during the academic year by bringing you relevant job postings by email all semester long.
  • Schedule an appointment with a CAC career adviser to review your resume. Update your resume to reflect fall semester coursework, activities, and honors.
  • Your resume is usually the first impression you give a potential employer; make sure it meets SIPA and/or the organizations format requirements.
  • Network! Reach out to Alumni and other recruiters via linkedin and set up informational interviews with prospective employers to get informed on the job application process, requirements and make long-term contacts.
  • Schedule an appointment with a SIPA Career Coach (SIPACC). Coaches share their industry expertise related to your career interests.

NYC BEYOND SIPA

If you are spending winter break in NY, we have a list of activities for you to enjoy the holiday time and lessen the FOMO of time not spent at home with family and friends.

ONEDERLAND at One World ObservatoryONEDERLAND AT ONE WORLD OBSERVATORY

Perched at the top of the nation's tallest skyscraper, One World Observatory is used to taking it up a notch—literally. And this year, they're doing just that again with a delightful holiday experience aptly titled ONEDERLAND.

This newly opened, mountaintop-inspired display brings a cozy chalet lounge, gingerbread cafe and fun photo opps to the 100th floor of One World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. It’s back after a three-year hiatus amid the pandemic and will run through January 8.

Flatiron District Holiday Walking TourFlatiron District Holiday Walking Tour

You'll learn about the Star of Hope, the country’s first public Christmas tree lighting and the international toy and gift center. Plus, see where Dr. Clement Clarke Moore wrote his famous Christmas poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”) in his country home on 23rd Street in 1822.
Tours are held on Sundays, December 11 and 18 hosted by The Flatiron NoMad Partnership.

Better yet? You don't need to register in advance. Just show up before 11am at the tip of the Flatiron building at 23rd Street just east of Fifth Avenue. Even better? Tours are free!
