NYC decided to skip spring and dive right into the heat of the summer last week! With the change in weather, the time for spring allergies is here too...but so are the Cherry Blossoms! Take a breather this week and go treat yourself to a walk in Central Park, a cupcake or two (or as many as you want), and soak in the beauty of the blossoms while they last.

Asian Development Bank's Outlook for Developing Asia
When: Tuesday, April 18, 2023
Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Please join ADB's Chief Economist Albert Park for a discussion about the latest Asian Development Outlook publication. Mr. Park is the chief spokesperson for ADB on economic issues. He leads the Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department (ERCD), which publishes key knowledge products such as the Asian Development Outlook, Asian Economic Integration Report, Asia Bond Monitor, and Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific.

Mr. Park's discussion will include: 

  • The outlook for economic growth and inflation in developing Asia in 2023-24, including the effects of the PRC’s exit from its zero-COVID policy
  • Risks to the outlook, from the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine to monetary tightening
  • The need for greener trade and investment to tackle climate change and ensure sustainable growth in Asia and the Pacific (AEIR)

EPD is excited to announce the dates of the Workshop 2022-23 Final Presentations. The workshop presentations will run from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 27 and Friday, April 28, followed by a reception (more details below). Come support your second-years and learn about the amazing development work they have done in the past 6 months!

Book Talk: 'Locked Out of Development: Insider and Outsiders in Arab Capitalism'

The Middle East and North Africa Forum is holding a book talk on Arab Capitalism with Dr. Steffen Hertog (Associate Professor in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics) and Dr. Lisa Anderson (Special Lecturer and James T. Shotwell Professor Emerita of International Relations at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs). Both will be discussing Dr. Hertog's new book called "Locked Out of Development: Insiders and Outsiders in Arab Capitalism." Professor Anderson will moderate a conversation on the topic, where students can take part in this discussion.

Seohyun Lee (MIA ’24) shares her personal opinions as a North Korean defector from an elite family, offering a unique perspective on the hermit kingdom. Drawing from her background and experiences, Seohyun explores the complex dynamics of privilege, oppression, and the challenges faced by those living under the Kim Jong Un regime. As an advocate for change, Seohyun shares her views on human rights in North Korea and highlights the importance of addressing these issues. Through her YouTube channel "Pyonghattan" and public speaking engagements, she passionately argues for the prioritization of human rights in the pursuit of international peace and security.

Politics as Poetry: Caste, Identity, and Solidarity

Join MPA-DP for a talk with Gina Lucarelli on the work done by UNDP Accelerator Labs, grassroots innovations and decolonising development. Gina will also talk about the documentary titled "for Tomorrow: the Documentary"

Gina stewards the world's largest learning network on sustainable development through the Accelerator Labs, 91 social innovation labs embedded in the United Nations Development Programme. She's been working on human rights and development work for over 20 years, but is just getting started! A systems thinker, designer and fixer, she leads, learns from, and creates space for experiments that tackle complex development problems and the new categories and opportunities they create. She has focused her development work on Asia, Eastern Europe and most recently Africa. She writes, talks about and is always looking for ways to tap into collective intelligence, learn from grassroots knowledge, and drive continuous R&D to transform the systems that will determine whether future generations will be able to meet their development needs. Her work has been acknowledged in Apolitical’s Public Service Team of the Year in 2019 ,covered in the MIT Sloan Review (Summer 2020) analyzed as a Harvard Business School Case Study (Fall 2022) and depicted in For Tomorrow, a documentary on grassroots innovation available on Amazon Prime (Release date September 16th, 2022).

Sheela Patel is the founder director of the Society for Promotion of Area Resource Centres (SPARC), an NGO that has been working since 1984 to support community organisations of the urban poor in their efforts to access secure housing and basic amenities and seek their right to the city. 

Patel is widely recognised – nationally and internationally – for seeking urgent attention to the issues of urban poverty, housing and infrastructure onto the radar of governments, bilateral and international agencies, foundations and other organizations. She is a founder, among many, of Slum Dwellers International, a transnational social movement of the urban poor, whose board she previously chaired.

Join the World Press Freedom Day's 30th anniversary event at the UN Headquarters in New York City on 2 May, 2023!

This year’s World Press Freedom Day global celebration is organized at the UN Headquarters in New York, marking the 30 years since the UN General Assembly’s decision to proclaim May 3rd as the international day for press freedom. World Press Freedom Day 2023 theme is “Shaping a Future of Rights. Freedom of Expression as a driver for all other human rights.” A full day of high-level plenary sessions will take place on 2 May at the UN General Assembly Hall. The plenaries will feature prominent human rights advocates, press freedom activists, Nobel Peace Prize laureates, media leaders and renowned journalists from all over the world. The full programme will be released shortly and will be available in the website.

NYC BEYOND SIPA 

Attend The Queen's Ball: A Bridgerton Experience

For all the Bridgerton fans: Regency era London is taking over Manhattan this month during a Bridgerton-themed immersive extravaganza. You're invited to "The Queen's Ball: A Bridgerton Experience," a multifaceted event narrated by the one and only Lady Whistledown.

You'll get to interact with characters, explore immersive vignettes, sip themed cocktails, buy some exclusive merch, revel in a dance and acrobatics show and take a whole lot of photos.

The experience, which lasts about 90 minutes, kicks off on April 27 and runs through the summer at Mediapro Manhattan Studio at 508 West 37th Street by 10th Avenue in Hudson Yards. Tickets, which start at $49 per person, aren't available yet but you can join the waitlist for the event right here.
