It's election season at SIPA.
Applications to run for a board position for
Human Rights Working Group 2020 are officially open!
HRWG Mission/Vision
Our mission is to promote, educate, and mobilize students in support of international human rights and the study of human rights.
Our vision is to raise awareness of global human rights issues amongst the Columbia student community and provide Columbia students with the opportunity to engage in substantive human rights advocacy, educational, and social events and community outreach. The group shall also work to provide professional development and networking opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers within the human rights field.
Positions Responsibilities:
The Co-Presidents are responsible for
• Being the presiding officer at all meetings
• Filling vacancies, with the advice of the Executive Board, until general elections are conducted
• Calling special meetings of the organization or the Executive Board at his/her discretion
• Delegating organizational and procedural matters
• Maintaining a cordial relationship with school administration, faculty, and student organizations
• Representing the organization at official gatherings
• Presenting, along with the Treasurer, the semester budget for approval by SIPASA
• Planning semester calendar of events with input from Executive Board

The Treasurer is responsible for
• Receiving all monies payable to the organization, and shall make all payments necessary on behalf of the organization
• Managing the budget of the organization
• Keeping accurate statements of receipts and disbursements
• Preparing a semester organizational budget to be approved by the Executive Board and upon Board approval presenting it to SIPASA
• Performing all duties assigned to him/her by the Executive Board or President

The Event Coordinator is responsible for
• Coordinating HRWG events from inception to execution, including speaker arrangements, room reservations, ordering food, and making appropriate requests of necessary school facilities and supplies
• Collaborating with the Treasurer for event budget and payments
• Maintaining connections with other student groups in order to further publicize HRWG events
• Performing all duties assigned to him/her by the Executive Board or President

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for
• All publicity surrounding the HRWG’s events, including flyers, posters, and making appropriate requests of necessary school facilities and supplies
• Managing all HRWG social media platforms, e.g., Facebook, Twitter, website, etc.
• Maintaining connections with other student groups in order to further publicize HRWG events
• Performing all duties assigned to him/her by the Executive Board or President

The Community Outreach Officer is responsible for
• Liaising with SIPA and Columbia University student groups to collaborate on existing outreach programs
• Forming an outreach team, comprised of graduate and/or undergraduate students, and existing outreach programs, to begin outreach to Harlem communities and organizations
• Holding outreach and community service events to serve Harlem communities and organizations
• Evaluating outreach and community service events, to ensure they are serving the intended communities, and adjust where need be
• Performing all duties assigned to him/her by the Executive Board or President
