STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS

Adam Sperry is a second-year MIA student originally from Boston, MA concentrating in Economic & Political Development and specializing in Data Analytics & Quantitative Analysis. Prior to his studies at SIPA, Adam graduated from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study concentrating in the Socioeconomics of Behavior. For the past four years, Adam has worked in financial crime investigation, first as an Investigative Legal Analyst for the New York Attorney General’s Office and later as a Senior Financial Intelligence Analyst for Homeland Security Investigations and the New York High Intensity Financial Crime Area (HIFCA) investigating money laundering related to human trafficking, drug trafficking, international corruption, and terrorism. Following his time at SIPA, Adam is looking to work at the intersection of financial integrity, financial inclusion, and international development to expand access to the financial system through further work in the US government, an international organization, or private sector technology company.

Danielle Neftin is a first year MIA-EPD student, specializing in TMaC, with a regional specialization in Russia and the former Soviet states. Prior to starting at SIPA, Danielle spent 8 years working in international media at VICE, where she got to live in Paris and Copenhagen, make documentaries, launch TV channels and websites around the world, and develop funding strategies to encourage Fortune 100 companies to sponsor and support editorial work. As a first generation American, Danielle grew up speaking Russian at home, and in 2015, was invited to travel to Siberia and Kazakhstan to co-host a documentary for VICE called “Russian Road Trip,” - a 3-part series about the present day effects of the Soviet Union’s nuclear past. This experience inspired Danielle to continue to research the Russian region and she hopes to use her time at SIPA to write on Russian themes such as media influence, democracy in tech policy, and censorship. A native New Yorker (by way of New Jersey), Danielle loves this city and discovering its many hidden book shops, cafes, and local characters. Outside of school, Danielle is an avid people watcher, podcast nerd, and is desperately trying to learn French. Reach out to her if you’re also looking to practice!

PICK OF THE WEEK

This week's featured film:
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

In Chicago 1968, the Democratic Party Convention was met with protests from activists like the moderate Students for a Democratic Society led by Tom Hayden and the militant Yippies led by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, which led to violent confrontations with the local authorities. As a result, seven of the accused ringleaders are arraigned on charges like Conspiracy by the hostile Nixon administration, including Bobby Seale of the Black Panthers who was not involved in the incident. What follows is an unfair trial presided by the belligerent Judge Hoffman (No relation) and prosecuted by a reluctant but duty-bound Richard Schultz.

Watch Trailer here, Watch it on Netflix.

This week's featured book: The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro
Everywhere acknowledged as a modern American classic, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and chosen by the Modern Library as one of the hundred greatest books of the twentieth century, The Power Broker is a huge and galvanizing biography revealing not only the saga of one man's incredible accumulation of power, but the story of the shaping (and mis-shaping) of New York in the twentieth century.
