STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Welcome to the first Student Spotlight of the Semester! Each week we will feature an EPD student from first or second year so we can learn a bit about our classmates and their backgrounds!

Audrey Hatfield - MPA Class of 2023
I'm a first year MPA student in the EPD concentration.  I hail from the Pacific Northwest and hold an undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Washington in Seattle.  I spent the last four years working in both San Francisco and New York in the technology sector providing venture debt for start-up companies.  I chose SIPA because I'm hoping to learn more about the policies that run behind the scenes of our daily lives, and how I can take a bigger role in making sure those reflect the world we want to live in.  I'm very excited to be part of the vibrant SIPA community and am looking forward to learning alongside my new peers!

PICK OF THE WEEK

This week's featured book: Things We Lost to the Water by Eric Nguyen

On Former President Obama's Summer 2021 Reading List, Things We Lost to the Water is a story of a family of immigrants relocated to America. When Huong arrives in New Orleans with her two young sons, she is jobless, homeless, and worried about her husband, Cong, who remains in Vietnam. As she and her boys begin to settle in to life in America, she continues to send letters and tapes back to Cong, hopeful that they will be reunited and her children will grow up with a father. Their search for identity--as individuals and as a family--threatens to tear them apart, until disaster strikes the city they now call home and they are suddenly forced to find a new way to come together and honor the ties that bind them.

(We would love to hear your recommendations! Let us know what you have watched/read/listened to recently so we can feature them in the next newsletter!)
