Supporting a Durable and Inclusive Peace in Afghanistan: The Role of Afghan Women

Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security & Development, International Peace Institute, 777 United Nations Plaza, 12th Floor
The International Peace Institute, Cordaid, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, and NYU Center for Global Affairs invite you to a lunchtime policy forum on “Supporting a Durable and Inclusive Peace in Afghanistan: The Role of Afghan Women.”
The promotion and protection of women’s rights is not simply an internal matter; it is essential to the international community’s security and to sustainable development in Afghanistan. Over the course of the last two decades, the participation of women in political processes has paved the way for the inclusion of other minority groups and served as a bulwark against regression and extremism. But recent political developments and the downgrading of women’s rights in ongoing peace efforts have demonstrated how tenuous these gains are. Women will be critical to ensuring that any settlement emerging from these talks protects the progress they have made.
To that end, this policy forum will focus on how the international community can support efforts to engender an inclusive and enduring peace in Afghanistan, with women as vital stakeholders.
