Happy fourth week of classes!

Hello EPD-ers!

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us on Saturday for an incredible retreat! We really enjoyed getting to know all of you better and we hope you will maintain these amazing new connections with your peers in EPD. If you were at the retreat, please fill out this anonymous feedback form linked here. We will be working on some upcoming social events so that you can continue to form relationships with students and faculty at SIPA and build out your EPD network. Keep an eye out for that!

We know this upcoming week will be very busy for many of you with UNGA and with finalized schedules finally hitting their stride. Please remember to take care of yourselves. Burnout is not a prerequisite for success. Take a deep breathe and take it one day at a time. You got this!

And beware... UNGA traffic is like no other.

This week’s newsletter includes:

EPD Student Spotlight: Get to Know Your Peers

This newsletter isn't just about sharing information with you—it's about building connections. We want you to get to know your peers and have opportunities to network. That's why we’re continuing with the EPD Student Spotlight as part of our newsletter. We are still waiting on students to sign up!

Please use this
link to share your story and upload a picture of yourself. This is a great way for us to celebrate and learn about the inspiring individuals in the EPD community.

As you know, EPD is incredibly diverse, with students interested in a wide range of sectors. This diversity is one of our program’s greatest strengths, making us stand out in the job market!

SIPA State of the World Conference:
Implementing the Pact for the Future

Wednesday, September 25, 5-7:30 pm ET
IAB Rm 1501
RSVP HERE

At the Summit of the Future in September 2024, the global community will adopt several landmark agreements. The Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations cover a broad, ambitious set of issues, including a new agenda for peace, improved global governance, reform of the international financial architecture, safe digital access and AI governance and youth leading for the future. But it is not always clear how the ambitious commitments can be implemented. The inaugural State of the World Conference at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs provides a platform for meaningful discussions on how the lofty aspirations of global governance expressed in these outcome documents can be translated into concrete action. The conference brings together world-leading academics, UN leaders, key Member States and youth leaders to offer specific and actionable inputs and expert advice on the key steps to implement the outcomes.

Panel 1: Reform of Global Governance (Moderated by Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Arnold A. Saltzman Professor of Practice in International and Public Affairs, SIPA-Columbia and former UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping)

Panel 2: Reform of the International Financial Architecture (Moderated by José-Antonio Ocampo, Professor of Professional Practice, SIPA-Columbia, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs)

The Brooklyn Book Festival is New York City’s largest free literary festival and connects readers with local, national and international authors and publishers during the course of a celebratory literary week.

The Festival presents original programming and enthusiastically welcomes New York City’s cross cultural book readers as well as national and international attendees. The Festival is known for fostering creative dialogue among the authors, presenting new literary voices as well as established authors, and for serving the literary community by providing a highly visible platform for the work of authors and publishers.

The Brooklyn Book Festival was launched in 2006 as a one-day event to address the need for a free, major literary event that embraced the diverse constituencies of New York City. It has since grown to include 8 days of city-wide Bookend events, its flagship Festival Day with 300 authors and a Literary Marketplace with 250 independent and major publishers, and the BKBF Children’s Day that celebrates childhood reading. The Festival’s credo is “hip, smart and diverse”.
