Community Savings Circles and Remittances: Building on the Trillion Dollar Informal Economic System
When: Wednesday, October 18, 2023 | 1-2 pm
Where: Room 801

The "informal economic sector” swirls around us. We outsiders can’t see it, yet a villager or immigrant could tell us how it works. Ask the townsfolk and villagers who run the most transparent and community-minded savings groups how they would organize more groups. Grassroots Finance Action did just this and was astounded by the results. Please join Jeffrey Ashe, Director of Grassroots Finance Action and SIPA Adjunct Professor, for a discussion of how these community savings groups are revolutionizing access to very much needed resources among the most disadvantaged.

Book Recommendation of the Week

Exit, Voice and Loyalty: Responses to Decline in Firms, Organizations and States by Albert O. Hirschman

An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development, Hirschman looks in this book at decline rather than growth. He makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, "exit," is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, "voice," is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change "from within." The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena.
