STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Welcome to the second Student Spotlight of the Semester! Each week we will feature an EPD student from first or second year so we can learn a bit about our classmates and their backgrounds!

Nisha Karki - MIA Class of 2023
I am a first year MIA student in the EPD concentration. I am from Nepal, but I feel more at home in New York City, than any other places. Prior to SIPA, I was working for a tech startup overseeing the operations and also taking on mini projects that interested me – such as building a digital marketing team and supporting the content creation process, overseeing in-house software developments as a product owner and training employees on culture and inclusive leadership across the offices at Pune (India), New York, Texas and California.

At SIPA, other than forming ideas and learning from my extraordinary peers, I want to forge a path to a career of policymaking, particularly working on reducing gaps between children of marginalized communities and access to quality education. Education transformed my life and I believe quality inclusive education is an intergenerational solution to poverty, gender disparity, social and economic inequality and almost any other global issues.

PICK OF THE WEEK

This week's featured book: Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City, Andrea Elliott

In her debut book (releasing on October 5th), Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Andrea Elliott tells the harrowing story of a girl’s coming-of-age against the backdrop of the homeless crisis in New York City. Invisible Child traces almost a decade of Dasani Coates’ life, beginning in 2012 when she lived in a Brooklyn shelter at 11 years old. As she grows older, Dasani is forced to decide whether to keep her family intact or attend boarding school and leave them behind. Through following her journey, Elliott crafts an intimate exploration of poverty and racism in the U.S., as well as a portrait of a young person’s resilience.

(We would love to hear your recommendations! Let us know what you have watched/read/listened to recently so we can feature them in the next newsletter!)
