Fall is officially here!

Hello EPD-ers!

Fall is officially here and so are heaps of assignments to finish! We can’t believe it’s only been three weeks into the semester and we are already sleep deprived. But let’s cherish this weather, enjoy the beginning of fall foliage and laze around at Ancell Plaza and Low Steps before it gets too cold and we’re imprisoned inside Lehman and Butler for the rest of the semester.

Speaking of cherishing your time at SIPA, SIPASA Welcome Back social is here this week (more details below), and you don’t want to miss it (even though some of the first years and J-termers will be dreading their Micro midterm around that time). But if there is one advice we would give you, it would be to not forget to have fun while you work hard.

This week’s newsletter includes:

  • EPD Events
  • EPD Coffee Dates - LAST CALL!
  • Career Advancement Center Events – September 26 to September 29, 2023

EPD Student Spotlight - Stefanny Villamizar

Hello there!
I'm Stefanny from Colombia, a second-year MPA student. I have a background in law and public policy. Before moving to New York, I lived in Bogotá and worked for the government at the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare. After graduation I want to work in government crisis and public affairs. Fun fact: I love going to the MET and exploring the city!

If you want to be featured in our newsletter, s

Community Savings Groups: A Trillion More Dollars for Development Every Year

When: Wednesday, October 18, 2023 | 1-2 pm
Where: Room 801

The "informal economic sector” swirls around us. We outsiders can’t see it, yet a villager or immigrant could tell us how it works. Ask the townsfolk and villagers who run the most transparent and community-minded savings groups how they would organize more groups. Grassroots Finance Action did just this and was astounded by the results. Please join Jeffrey Ashe, Director of Grassroots Finance Action and SIPA Adjunct Professor, for a discussion of how these community savings groups are revolutionizing access to very much needed resources among the most disadvantaged.

EPD Coffee Dates Series

Would you like to meet fellow EPD students and get to know them better? We're here to simplify the process for you. All you need to do is fill out this form, and we will pair you with a coffee date every week throughout the semester.

Fill this form if you want to participate! We will be announcing the pairs this week!

Book Recommendation of the Week – Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa

Evicted from the ancient village of Ein Hod by the newly formed state of Israel in 1948, the Abulheja family is moved into the Jenin refugee camp. There, exiled from his beloved olive groves, the father languishes with a broken heart, while his eldest son falls victim to an Israeli bullet. His grandchildren struggle against tragedy toward freedom, peace, and home. This is a story of a Palestinian family told through four generations.

Amal, the granddaughter grows up as a refugee and sees her family breaking and falling apart, losing friends and people who remind her of what home could be. Mornings in Jenin is a story of love and loss, but it’s also a story of resilience, courage and bravery against oppression and atrocities. It is historical fiction so it’s a great recommendation if you are interested in historical events leading up to Palestinian occupation and its progression.
