ATTN May Graduates:
Apply for Graduation by Dec. 1st!

GPPS Newsletter: Week of November 29th

Good evening GPPS! We hope you are staying warm!

If you are graduating May 2024, you need to apply for graduation by this Friday, December 1st. Rest assured this is a procedural step that should only take a minute or two!

Except in cases where students have been instructed to apply for graduation through other means, students should complete the online Application for Degree available directly within SSOL, under the Degree Application Status tab (which can be found under Academic Records, under Student Records).

All students eligible to apply through this online Application will find a button on the bottom of the Degree Application Status page, marked “Apply for Degree or Certification.” Clicking the button will allow students to submit their Application for Degree directly to the Office of the Registrar.

NOTE that the Application includes multiple graduation dates. While the application will default to the next available conferral date, students must ensure that they have selected the correct graduation date for their program from the pulldown menu. Students graduating next semester will select May 15 as the graduation date.

More information (including on name change requests) can be found here!

Call for Papers

Virginia Ramey Mollenkott Award

To encourage and support original research and study of LGBTQ religious history, LGBTQ-RAN offers an annual award for papers, the Virginia Ramey Mollenkott Award. Initiated in 2005, this award honors outstanding scholarship in LGBTQ religious history from among an array of academic papers submitted. The Virginia Ramey Mollenkott Award is the only award offered in this academic arena.

Submission Guidelines
The LGBTQ Religious Archives Network invites submissions for its annual Virginia Ramey Mollenkott Award. To be eligible, papers must be in English, doubled-spaced, and between 15 and 35 pages in length; must demonstrate original research using generally accepted historical methods; and must focus on a topic relevant to the study of LGBTQ religious history. One submission per author will be accepted in any given year. Both unpublished and published papers are eligible, provided the latter have been published since January 1, 2022.

Papers are welcome from all scholars in the field, including established and junior scholars, independent scholars (those without academic affiliation), and graduate and undergraduate students. All papers will be evaluated according to the same criteria, but if the number of student submissions is sufficient, the jury may consider awarding a separate Student Award for that year’s competition.

The Virginia Ramey Mollenkott Award uses a blind review process. In preparing your manuscript, do not include any information that could reveal your identity or that of your co-authors. The title section and the page headers/footers of your paper should not contain any author names or affiliations. In the body of your submission, please try to eliminate all direct references to your own previous work. Your assistance is important in order to maintain a fair, unbiased reviewing process.

Your submission should include an abstract of your paper.

Complete this
electronic submissions form and attach the file with your paper. Submissions must be sent electronically by December 1, 2023. Documents can be submitted in .pdf, .doc, .rtf, or .wpd formats.

The winning paper will receive a $1,000 prize.

68th Commission on the Status of Women: Global Youth and Adolescent Recommendations

Dear advocates for change,

The 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) is on the horizon, focusing on "Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective."

We are inviting young leaders in all their diversity to conduct consultations and submit recommendations that can inform the CSW68 deliberations. Your engagement is critical to ensure that the voices of youth are heard at this pivotal event.

Here's what we're asking:
Conduct youth and/or adolescent-led consultations within your networks to discuss the priority theme.

Use the attached concept note and guiding questions to steer your discussions.
Compile your findings and recommendations in a report.

Submit your report via the Google Form by 15 January 2024.

For guidance on hosting consultations and for more detailed information, refer to the PDFs attached to this email.

Should you wish to discuss your consultation plans or need clarification, contact erika.dupuis@unwomen.org with the subject line “CSW68 Youth and Adolescents Recommendations.”

Additionally, we encourage you to share the call for recommendations with your network. Attached is an asset you can use on social media to spread the word. We kindly encourage you to use the hashtags #GenerationEquality and #CSW68 in any posts.

Your submissions are invaluable, and we encourage incorporating various forms of media, including pictures and video, to capture the essence of your discussions.

Thank you for your commitment to advancing gender equality. We look forward to your contributions.

Email Isabella (PA) if you'd like to apply and need the attached concept note or social media asset (in English, Spanish or French).

Recommendation Corner <3

Gender-Related Media

Book: Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men (Caroline Criado Perez): This book describes how a gender gap in data perpetuates bias and disadvantages women. In world largely built for men, this gap in data systematically ignores half the population, and is the root of the root of perpetual, systemic discrimination.

Music: Boygenius: An American indie supergroup made up of singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus.  Their name channels "boys and men we know who've been told that they are geniuses since they could hear, basically," a reference for overconfident men. They are also 2023 GQ Men of the Year honorees.

NYC Recommendations

Isa recommends:
Silver Moon Bakery (2740 Broadway): Delicious pastries, breads, and cakes right near campus. A great place to get a sweet treat while studying for finals!

Allie recommends:
Ground Support Cafe (West Broady and Spring St.) This SoHo cafe has delicious food and coffee, and has large communal tables. It's the perfect study spot off campus in a beautiful neighborhood.
