17 October marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. From the first goal of the MDG’s call to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger to SDG 1’s objective to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, global development cooperation has a strong focus on poverty. This high-level panel discusses efforts to end poverty in the context of multilateral arrangements and actions at the global, regional, and local level.

Venezuela has become the source of the world's largest refugee outflow as the country suffers from the world's highest inflation rate, a mind boggling 282,972%, homicide rates that have quintupled in the last two decades, and increasing repression of the press.  Cabot Prize 2019 medalist and New York Times correspondent Boris Muñoz, and members of Armando.Info, a Venezuelan news website awarded a special citation by the Cabot Prize Board for their courageous reporting, discuss the origins, present reality, and future options for this humanitarian crisis.

Phillips. David L. Phillips is Director of the Program on Peace-building and Rights at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights. He served as a Senior Advisor to the State Department during the administrations of President Clinton, Bush, and Obama. His recent book is The Great Betrayal: How America Abandoned the Kurds and Lost the Middle East. His forthcoming book is titled Front Line Syria: A Political and Military History of Syria’s Civil War.

The event, "Voluntary National Reviews for the SDGs: Are Countries Committed to Ending Extreme Child Poverty by 2030?" will encompass a discussion on the extent to which child poverty is addressed and highlighted in Voluntary National Reviews, and the way forward.

Using Behavioral Insights and Sports: Preventing Violent Extremism

Presentation on how core concepts of behavioral insights have been used recently, with a focus on social contexts and complex issues such as inclusion, diversity, cohesion and PVE. This session will discuss how we can leverage Behavioral insights in Sports and Development to tackle complex social challenges such as Inclusion, Diversity, Cohesion and even Violent Extremism.  Among other things, the experience of Generation Amazing will be provided in this regard as well as other applications of behavioral insights in sports, inclusion and PVE.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT
 
IO/UNS director a.i. Professor Daniel Naujoks is looking for a research assistant for Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 to support his analysis of the Global Development Policy Database he created. The research assistant will support Professor Naujoks to populate the database with a wider array of policy documents; use the qualitative research software NVivo to apply automatic and manual codes; create a dataset that is supplemented by statistical data available from other sources and support the analysis. Sustainable Development and Poverty in Small Island Developing States Intern, UNDP
UNDP is offering two part-time internships to work with UNDP SIDS Advisor to provide support towards the preparation of research and analytics, knowledge management, and organization of events regarding Smart Islands, Climate Action and Blue Economy issues to create/update a profile for each SIDS and UNDP’s offer for small islands developing states, reporting of the AOSIS project, and support compilation of communication materials, project stories, and dissemination.

Social Media Intern, UNDP

The Lion’s Share is an innovative wildlife conservation and animal welfare fund initiated by the private sector and UNDP. The initiative is to be capitalized by funds collected from advertisers when images or footage of animals are used in advertisements. Tanenbaum’s Conflict Resolution program identifies, studies, and supports the work of religiously motivated peace actors in conflict zones around the world. Our initiatives with and on behalf of these women and men promote religious peacemaking as a legitimate and sometimes necessary component of conflict resolution/transformation, peacebuilding and Track II (citizen) diplomacy.This position is an opportunity for a motivated student or recent graduate to help build the growing field of religious peacemaking. Join the IO/UNS Specialization at our next career series event led by SIPA alumna Gülden Türköz-Cosslett (MIA, Class of 1985). Before her current role as Deputy Director of UNDP's Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA), she served as UN Women's Director of Programmes, Senior Advisor to the UN Deputy Secretary-General, UN Resident Coordinator in Albania, and other UN agencies. Ms. Türköz-Cosslett will be sharing valuable tips from her experience.

Ms. Gülden Türköz-Cosslett, a national of Turkey, is the Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director, Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy, UNDP since February 2015.
Prior to this, Gülden was the Director of Programmes with UN Women. She has also served in the Office of the UN Deputy Secretary-General as Senior Advisor on System-Wide Coherence, where she led the Transition Team supporting the establishment of UN Women. Prior to that, Gülden served as the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Albania where she led the delivering as One UN initiative. Before that she was Team Leader for the Central Asia Cluster in UNDP's Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Earlier in her career, Gülden worked with the Executive Office of the Administrator as Programme Specialist, Portfolio Manager in UNOPS Regional Office in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, and UNCDF.
Gülden holds a Master's of International Affairs degree from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She is married and has a daughter.
