68th Commission on the Status of Women: Global Youth and Adolescent Recommendations

Dear advocates for change,

The 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) is on the horizon, focusing on "Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective."

We are inviting young leaders in all their diversity to conduct consultations and submit recommendations that can inform the CSW68 deliberations. Your engagement is critical to ensure that the voices of youth are heard at this pivotal event.

Here's what we're asking:
Conduct youth and/or adolescent-led consultations within your networks to discuss the priority theme.

Use the attached concept note and guiding questions to steer your discussions.
Compile your findings and recommendations in a report.

Submit your report via the Google Form by 15 January 2024.

For guidance on hosting consultations and for more detailed information, refer to the PDFs attached to this email.

Should you wish to discuss your consultation plans or need clarification, contact erika.dupuis@unwomen.org with the subject line “CSW68 Youth and Adolescents Recommendations.”

Additionally, we encourage you to share the call for recommendations with your network. Attached is an asset you can use on social media to spread the word. We kindly encourage you to use the hashtags #GenerationEquality and #CSW68 in any posts.

Your submissions are invaluable, and we encourage incorporating various forms of media, including pictures and video, to capture the essence of your discussions.

Thank you for your commitment to advancing gender equality. We look forward to your contributions.

Email Isabella (PA) if you'd like to apply and need the attached concept note or social media asset (in English, Spanish or French).

Gender-Related Media

Book: This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color: Published in 1981, this is an anthology of feminist essays by radical women of color. The collection includes personal essays, criticism, interviews, poetry, and visual art, and explores the confluence of identities systemic to women of color, including race, class, gender, and sexuality.

Podcast: Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang (found on Apple, Spotify, iHeart Radio): A podcast focused on the hottest pop culture moments, the hosts often interview queer and trans guests, and conversations range from arts and culture to politics. The podcast has been nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Podcast.

Movie: Fire Island (Hulu): A queer retelling of Pride and Prejudice, this film follows five queer friends on their annual trip to the Fire Island Pines. A modern rom-com examining queerness, friendship, and romance, the story centers on two best friends looking for a summer of love and adventure.

NYC Recommendations

Isa recommends:
Check out Pisticci Italian Trattoria near 125th and Broadway! They have delicious pasta and salads and are the first restaurant in NYC to be carbon-neutral. They power our restaurant by wind only, and offset the rest by planting trees - one day they hope to be carbon-negative!

Allie recommends:
Check out the winter markets around the city! Bryant Park and Union Square are the most famous, and both have amazing vendors, holiday activities like ice skating, and delicious food. It's a great way to get in the holiday spirit and take a break from studying!
