EPD Student Summer Spotlight

Thanks to all the EPD students who responded to our Student Summer Spotlight! Two of your classmates, Marisa Durham and Irina Elena Preotescu, shared with us what they're up to this summer:

Marisa Durham
Where are you spending the summer: Minsk, Belarus
What are you doing this summer: Belarus is only a few months out from a potentially transformative presidential election. I am currently helping with young civil society activists on how they can use big data for their campaign (all over Zoom of course)!
What have you done to get along while staying at home?: I am also taking four hours of Russian, so that usually eats up my time. I am also working on the Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 JIA print editions.

Irina Elena Preotescu
Where are you spending the summer: Pittsfield, Massachusetts
What are you doing this summer: I'm a COVID-19 Global Task Force member and Research Team coordinator for World Merit (internship); I'm also working to publish a policy analysis paper; and contributing to the Roma People's Project at Columbia University
What have you done to get along while staying at home: I have been reading Maya Angelou, watching everything I've been wanting to see on Netflix and educating myself on current issues, aside from work.

Faculty Spotlight: Daniel Corstange

Over the summer, we will highlight some of SIPA and EPD’s core faculty members! Feel free to explore faculty profiles and the classes that they teach at SIPA.

Daniel CorstangeDaniel Corstange is Associate Professor of Political Science and of International and Public Affairs.

Professor Corstange will teach "State Building in the Developing World" (INAF U6538), one of the core political development courses in the EPD curriculum, this coming fall. This course is a big picture class by design, which makes it a complement to the applied skills classes that round out the rest of the SIPA curriculum. It takes an overview of many of the conceptual challenges that development practitioners grapple with in their work. It starts off with discussions of state and institution building, then works through a series of topics on clientelism and elections, ethnic politics, and civil wars. Rather than trying to deal with any specific policy problems, or proposing any specific answers, the point of the course is to give students exposure to those recurring challenges that form the backdrop against which you will address the specific policy problems they will face in their careers.

Most of Professor Corstange's research takes place in the Arab world, which is one reason students get a little more of that than normal in his State Building class. A lot of his prior work focused on ethnic politics, clientelism, and elections. His current research focuses on how ordinary people respond to foreign intervention in their own country's domestic politics. More specifically, he has conducted a number of experiments with displaced Syrians to understand the conditions under which they support or oppose foreign intervention in their country's ongoing civil war. Professor Corstange's work includes a book, The Price of a Vote in the Middle East: Clientelism and Communal Politics in Lebanon and Yemen, published in 2016, and several journal papers.

On a lighter note, he observes that if it turns out that we need to do some of our class sessions virtually in the fall, you're likely to experience some Zoom bombing from a couple of chatty little kids who make up with raw charisma for what they lack in background reading.
