Getting into the semester mood

Hello EPD-ers!

Now that we are really getting into the semester after the add/drop period, things are starting to get serious. Lehman is getting crowded despite the mold, printers are getting queued and fish-bowl breaks are getting shorter. But we are still managing to catch up with our friends before rushing to classes, and able to see our favorite people at SIPA socials. And speaking of socials, a big thanks to everyone who made it to the EPD Mixer last Thursday. We had a great turn out.

Cookies were a hit and new friends were made. We hope to bring you more EPD events where you can meet EPD experts, network, and learn while also getting a chance to make more friends.

Also, EPD retreat is just around the corner and we can’t be more excited. You will get a chance to meet some of our EPD faculty and spend a whole day with your fellow EPD-ers with all the fun activities we have planned for you (and of course the food).

To everyone who has registered on CampusGroups, don’t forget to make your payment by 5pm on Friday, September 22 in the EPD office (room 1305)

For additional communication and updates, we invite you to join our EPD WhatsApp group. Click here to be a part of our EPD community.

This week’s newsletter includes:

EPD Coffee Dates Series - Our Newest Initiative

Would you like to meet fellow EPD students and get to know them better? We're here to simplify the process for you. All you need to do is fill out this form, and we will pair you with a coffee date every week throughout the semester. You can then reach out to your matched date and build a deeper connection. After we've gathered all the applications, we will share an Excel masterlist with assigned coffee dates, and the rest is up to you! Initiate contact with your date, plan your coffee meetup, and relish the conversation.

Fill this form if you want to participate!

Community Savings Groups: A Trillion More Dollars for Development Every Year

When: Wednesday, September 27, 2023 | 1-2 pm

Where: TBD

The "informal economic sector” swirls around us. We outsiders can’t see it, yet a villager or immigrant could tell us how it works. Ask the townsfolk and villagers who run the most transparent and community-minded savings groups how they would organize more groups.   Grassroots Finance Action (https://lnkd.in/et6Yu8w) did just this and was astounded by the results. Please join Jeffrey Ashe, Director of Grassroots Finance Action and SIPA Adjunct Professor, for a discussion of how these community savings groups are revolutionizing access to very much needed resources among the most disadvantaged.
