Hello EPD-ers!

Happy solar eclipse day! If last week tried us with stormy rain and an earthquake, this week is starting off with a solar eclipse. Mercury is definitely in retrograde and we feel it. Anyhow, if you are free between 3 to 4 pm, you can see the partial eclipse in New York City starting around 3:25 p.m. Be sure to protect your eyes with dark sunglasses before heading out to see the eclipse!

On a different note, the end of the year is almost here with last minute submissions and the annual SIPA Gala this weekend. There is a mixture of nostalgia and can't-wait-to-graduate feelings and we are in the same boat. Just make sure to enjoy the last few weeks and do not get too preoccupied by graduation anxiety. It’s all going to be amazing.

 This week’s newsletter includes:

  • EPD and SIPA Events

Where: IAB 409

In this session, Alex Counts, who has started, led, and grown multiple nonprofits including the Grameen Foundation and the India Philanthropy Alliance, and who has written three books on mission-driven leadership, will share the key elements of his next book on how to succeed as a first-time executive director of a nonprofit organization. Many of these lessons are also applicable to those who serve on boards of nonprofits or who are engaged in a traditional business start up. They range from compliance, product development, and people management to public relations, and self-care. He will focus on those skills, techniques and mindsets that are most important for someone leading a small (under $5 million budget) nonprofit for the first time.

  • Book talk: Scaling Up Development Impact

When/Time: Wednesday, April 10, 2024 / 1-2PM

Where: IAB 409 & online

Today, nearly one billion people lack electricity, over three billion lack clean water, and 750 million lack basic literacy skills. Many of these challenges could be solved with existing solutions, and technology now enables us to reach the last mile like never before. Yet, few solutions attain the necessary scale to match the size of these challenges.  Scaling Up Development Impact recognizes that scaling up is a process of transformation. It emphasizes that scaling up impact requires putting the people closest to the problem at the center, understanding that they have the utmost knowledge of their problems and thus are invaluable in co-creating long-lasting, scalable solutions.

For more information, visit here. Lunch will be provided.

Ali Benmakhlouf, in conversation with Madeleine Dobie

RSVP HERE

Starting from an anthropological reading of Montaigne, Ali Benmakhlouf considers the way Montaigne speaks to us of others - Amerindians, Turks, Africans - and not of the Other. Diversity without alterity, but rather a single humanity: conceiving and judging make humanity a single species. The humanity of others is that of all those who, in their own way, have resisted slavery, forced conversion, colonialism and the Inquisition. By rejecting the concepts of "savage," "primitive" and "barbarian," Montaigne honors the common sense of all, a common sense that is always at work, sometimes stifled by dictatorships, colonizations and hegemonic powers, but never annihilated. It lies at the heart of every act of resistance, in other words, of every act of freedom.

Ali Benmakhlouf is Professor at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (Morocco), and Director of the Center for African Studies. He is a member of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and of the National Academy of Pharmacy. Author of numerous works on the philosophy of logic, classical Arab philosophy and medical ethics.

Madeleine Dobie is Professor of French at Columbia.  Her research interests include Francophone/postcolonial literature, colonial history, and 18th-century culture.  She is the author of Trading Places: Colonization and Slavery in 18th-Century French Culture and co-author of Relire Mayotte Capécia: une femme des Antilles dans l'espace colonial français (with Myriam Cottias).
