Defintely also check out our spolight below on your fellow GPPS student, Christina, and her featured op-eds on the importance of investing in gender equality, and on why climate action must focus on women's health.

No newsletter next week due to Thanksgiving Break -- see you the 28th!

GPPS Student Spotlight:
Christina Chilimba

Christina is a first-year HRHP/GPPS student from Malawi with background expierence in civil society organizations and as a former fellow with Garça Machel's Youth Mentorship Program.

She is also the founder of a youth-led non-governmental organization called All for Youth, that trains young leaders in her home country (40 and counting!)

Earlier this year, she was a keynote speaker of the opening event of the World Heatlh Summit, and was able to discuss her work on the world stage. Following this, she was able to publish two op-eds: The first on the importance of Investing in Gender Equality and the second on why Climate action must focus on women’s health.

In a conversation between about her work, Christina explained that she feels that the biggest challenge to inacting gender policy is a lack of funding, and that the speed of its implementation does not proportionately correlate with the gender committments nations have made on the world stage. She emphasized the need for more gender specialists in government positions, in order for budget allocation and policy implementation to be gender sensitive.

She highly encourages students doing gender work to network with each other, in order to build a platform of support for gender mainstreaming that extends beyond SIPA, especially as this field evolves. She also advises students who are presently looking for opportunities to speak or write on these topics to join leadership programs in order to find connections and mentor that can get you there. Most importantly, she says, is to always keep trying, even if at first the door slams in your face!

We hope you take the time to read Christina's op-eds, and you can connect with her on LinkedIn here!

Gender-Related Media

Book: Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto (Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharya and Nancy Fraser): This book makes the case for grassroots intersectional feminism, not only amongst women of different identities, but across issues such as economic justice, unaffordable housing, poverty wages, healthcare, climate change, border policing. This manifesto promotes a bottom-up feminism that is anti-capitalist, eco-socialist and anti-racist.

TV Shows: Our Flag Means Death (HBO Max): A period comedy series, this show follows Stede Bonnet, a wealthy English landowner in Barbados, as he abandons his life of privilege to become a pirate in the 18th century. Based on the real-life Bonnet, the show has been praised for its positive LGBTQ+ representation.

Music: Chapell Roan (Singer/Songwriter): An American singer-songwriter from the Midwest, she describes her style as "dark pop with ballad undertones," and her music is a mix of organic and electronic keyboard sounds. Check out the song "Red Wine Supernova" !

The fall foliage in Central Park right now. The trees are going to start dropping their leaves before we know it --- take some time to go for a walk and see the beautiful colors!

Allie recommends:
Falafel on Broadway! (3151 Broadway) A short walk from campus, this is a delicious, affordable spot for lunch serving delicious Middle Eastern food.
